Davidsonville-based South Maryland scored five times in the third inning and held on to defeat Arbutus Little League, 8-6, to capture the District 4 Championship. With the win, South Maryland advances to the state tournament in Easton.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, South Maryland started a big two-out rally. Matt Hawes tripled with the bases loaded to give South Maryland the lead. Johnny Belfiore singled to score Hawes, and Jack Roberts doubled in Belfiore to increase the lead to 5-2 In the fourth, Mekhi McDaniels scored on a wild pitch and winning pitcher Leonard Meade drove in Jake Leftrick to increase the lead to 7-2.
Jack Roberts tripled — his third hit of the game, — leading off the fifth and scored on a wild pitch. Colin Veres snuffled out a late Arbutus sixth-inning rally, with Danny O'Hagan fielding the final out.
The winner of the Maryland state tournament will advance to Bristol , Connecticut, for the Little League Eastern Regional, the last step before the World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
