Roy Eades Passes Away

Roy Eades, age 77, of Davidsonville, MD passed away on November 9, 2023. Roy was born in Washington DC on August 14, 1946.

He grew up in Riverdale, MD playing neighborhood baseball with his friends and riding his bike to the sound of baseball cards flickering in the spokes of the wheels. He regularly took the streetcar into Griffith Stadium to watch his beloved Washington Senators. Roy earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland.

He enjoyed a long and dedicated career of 42 years working for Safeway. Working his way up from a night stocker to store manager, he also trained checkout clerks, taught sanitation, and lastly spent more than a decade as the Director of Risk Management for Safeway's Eastern Division. He was a beloved colleague who could bring levity and humor to any situation and was known for treating everyone with respect.

In 1974 he married Diane Havas and they were happily married for 49 years. They built a life together in Maryland where they raised two boys and reveled in the joy of their two granddaughters.

Roy will be remembered most for his love of family, baseball, and his capacity for always being there to help friends and neighbors. He was curious, meticulous, and efficient in everything he did. He took great pride in caring for his home, his cars, his yard, and when something needed to be done, it was certain Roy was going to do it the right way.

His greatest pride was found in being a devoted husband, dad, and Papa. Raised by a single mother, he inspired many in how he provided guidance, love, and compassion in raising his boys. He loved coaching many of their teams when they were young. Later on, as a fan in the stands at their games, many an umpire still remembers his enthusiastic vocal support.

Roy was a gifted storyteller with a booming laugh, loquacious by nature, and the best dry-witted dad-joke teller. These skills served him well in his second career working his dream job as an usher and tour guide for the Washington Nationals from 2010 until his passing.

Roy was preceded in death by his mother, Camille in 1991. He is survived by his wife Diane; mother-in-law Irene; children Ryan (Melissa) and Kevin (Brina); and granddaughters, Payten and Brooklyn.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Roy's life on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, and on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at The United Parish of Bowie, 2515 Mitchellville Rd, Bowie, MD 20716, from 10 to 11 a.m. until a funeral service begins at 11:15 a.m. Interment will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 W Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD 21035.
