Spencer--Pro Basketball or Lacrosse

As the NBA season gets underway,  its minor league counterpart, the G League is still figuring out what this season will look like. Unable to finish last season due to the pandemic, the NBA’s largest feeder system has been on pause since March 12. That has left many prospects in limbo—including Northwestern’s Pat Spencer, a late bloomer in the basketball world who chose the sport over a career in professional lacrosse.

The Davidsonville, Maryland, native began his college athletic career on  the lacrosse team at Loyola University in his home state. By 2019, he’d notched first-team All-American honors and finished as the sport’s Division I career assists leader. He hit second on the all-time points list and took home the top individual honor in college lacrosse—the Tewaaraton Award. But he decided to use his final year of eligibility to play hoops at Northwestern as a graduate transfer.

Md Covid Cases Skyrocketing

New Covid cases are skyrocketing in Maryland and Anne Arundel. Maryland is seeing a staggering 100%

Maryland Covid cases surge November 2020increase in new cases compared to just 2 weeks ago.

The first 2 waves, in May and August, are beginning to appear more like ripples compared to the huge wave now forming.

Most experts feel this surge could potentially be catastrophic as Maryland enters the cold and flu season as well as the the holiday season. When you add in Covid fatigue and  economic concerns, the US has the recipe for exceeding capacity of all health care.

Shooting Suspect Sought

Fugitive apprehension detectives are searching for a Crownsville man who police say was responsible for a targeted double shooting in Edgewater on Saturday, which left a 53-year-old man dead and another man in the hospital with gunshot injuries, Anne Arundel County police said.

Ronal Alcidis Maldonado Quijada, of Middletown Road in Annapolis, was identified by police Monday as the man killed in the shooting. Police have not released the identity of the 28-year-old man injured in the shooting.

Detectives worked quickly, as police said they’d obtained an arrest warrant for Wilber Oswaldo Nunez-Menendez by Sunday morning. They said evidence and witness interviews pointed to the 25-year-old, who’s now wanted on murder, attempted murder, assault and related firearms charges.

Patrol officers and homicide detectives rushed to the 20th block of Brick Church Road around 7 p.m. Saturday after somebody called 911 to report a shooting. The rural road is flanked by foliage on both sides near its intersection with Solomon’s Island Road.

At the scene, police said they found Quijada suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced him dead.

Quijada’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death.

As detectives canvassed the area, fire department personnel rushed the 28-year-old to a local trauma center with non-life-threatening injures. Police have not said which hospital the man was taken to.

Police said witnesses reported seeing the shooter flee in a gray vehicle before officers arrived. But officers issued a warning to law enforcement in the area to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

Detectives found the vehicle when they served a related search warrant, the location and parameters of which are unclear at this time.

Double Shooting On Brick Church Rd.

Just before 730pm on Saturday, November 14, 2020, officers responded to Brick Church Road for a shooting. On arrival, they discovered one deceased male and another with life threatening injuries. The injured victim was airlifted to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by Maryland State Police helicopter.

Among the other benefits provided through scouting, the Troop performs over 700 hours of community service every year.

Anthony Vigorito Passes Away

Anthony Richard "Vic" Vigorito, 87, a 16-year resident of Gambrills and previously of Temple Hills, MD, passed away on October 24, 2020.
He was born on April 2, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Pasquale and Marie Vigorito. After graduating from high school, Vic enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1952 and later transferred to the U.S. Air Force. In addition to duty stations in the states, Vic served in the Philippines and Germany. His last duty station was Andrews Air Force Base from which he retired in 1971 at the rank of Master Sergeant. Shortly thereafter, Vic joined the U.S. Secret Service and spent the next 20 years serving five Presidents as a member of the Foreign Dignitary Protection Security Division. Because he was fluent in Italian, Vic was assigned as the lead agent for both visits to the United States by Pope John Paul II.
While on home leave in January 1956, Vic met Ann D'Eredita on a Sunday evening blind date. Love blossomed quickly and they were married the following Saturday. Theirs was a story of love and friendship that continued to bloom for the next 59 years. Vic's laughter was engaging and he loved to entertain family and friends with jokes and stories from his military and Secret Service careers. In his younger years, he played fast-pitch softball in the Philippines. He also coached in daughter's softball league in New York and his son's little league baseball team in Camp Springs, MD. Vic and Ann were avid bowlers and, in their later years, enjoyed visiting casinos in Delaware and Maryland. Most of all, Vic was devoted to his family; their happiness was always his first priority. Vic was a former member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Clinton, MD and most recently attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, MD.
In addition to his parents, Vic was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ann; his son-in-law, Alberto DiPompo, both of whom died in 2015 and by his aunt, Margaret Omert. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah DiPompo of West River, MD; his son, Michael and wife, Bethany Vigorito of Woodbridge, VA; two grandchildren, Joseph and his wife, Jeannine DiPompo of Perry Hall, MD; one great-granddaughter, "My Little Girl"; one aunt, Josephine Molarini of Long Island, NY who was more like a sister to him; his devoted companion, Donna Trott of Solomons, MD; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to celebrate Vic's life with his family from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 1 at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 2 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD. Burial private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW online or at P.O. Box 8958, Topeka, KS 66608, or the ASPCA online or at P.O. Box 3471, Annapolis, MD 21403. Stream Restoration In Gravely

Gravely Run, formerly a 20-foot ravine, is now a healthy stream hospitable to frogs. Image by Cheryl Costello.

The proof is in the tadpoles. The restoration of a stream that eventually leads to the South River has produced remarkable results—for the first time in residents’ memory, frogs have appeared there.

What was a steep, hazardous ravine that washed runoff into waterways is now a healthy stream. Cheryl Costello gives us a look at the “before and after” of the Arundel Rivers Federation project in Davidsonville, Maryland. Watch video below:
