Helen Williams Passes Away

      Helen Sandberg Williams, 101, of Davidsonville and Annapolis, MD passed away on March 27, 2022.       
      She was born in Washington DC to Emma and Albert Sandberg and graduated from Northwestern High School. Helen was an 80-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star of the District of Columbia and a lifelong member of the Swedish Lodge in Washington.
     Helen had one sister (Katherine) and an infant brother (John), both of whom died before her. She was married to Richard Iglehart Williams who preceded her in death. They had three children, Carolyn (deceased), Barbara, and Richard (Cheryl). In addition she and her husband raised their niece, Jean, and nephew, Jim (Barbara). Helen had four grandsons and two great nieces and two great nephews. In addition, she had three great-great nieces and one great-great nephew. She had one great granddaughter. During WWII, Helen worked at Riggs Bank in Washington, assisting in the war coupon rationing department. Towards the end of the war, she married Richard and moved to Davidsonville, where they lived until his death.
      Helen was a member of All Hallows Parish in Davidsonville, where she served at various times, on the Vestry, Altar Guild, and finance committee. She loved the church and took great interest in the buildings and cemeteries. Helen worked in the Davidsonville Post Office for more than 30 years, first as a clerk, then the mail carrier and finally, as the Post Mistress. Upon retirement from the Post Office, she volunteered for more than ten years in both the Anne Arundel General Hospital and Meals on Wheels. In addition to her loving family and friends, Helen was supported by her devoted caregivers who greatly enhanced her quality of life and enabled her to remain in her home until her passing. Throughout her life Helen enjoyed traveling, gardening, baseball, and family gatherings.
       A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 11:00am. The service will be held at All Hallows Chapel in Davidsonville, followed by a reception. Donations in her memory can be made to the All Hallows Parish, Cemetery fund.

Davidsonville Man Gets 18 Years For Abuse

State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess announced Monday that Dennis Moreno,55, of Norwalk, Calif. and formerly of Davidsonville entered an Alford plea to one count of sex abuse of a minor and was sentenced to 18 years of active incarceration on March 24, 2022.    The victim was subjected to the abuse from about 5 years to 15 years.    He had a history of sexual abuse of minors,  but relatives did not report him until the most recent victim.  This alarming story can be read in more detail at:

Joseph Smith Passes Away



     Joseph Russell "Pop" Smith, Sr., age 77, a longtime resident of Davidsonville, Maryland, passed peacefully, surrounded by family, at his residence on March 22, 2022 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease.

     He was born November 30, 1944 in Washington, DC to James George Edward and Theresa Marie Perrie Smith, both now deceased. He began working for his father-in-law, Robert O'Dell, as a timber cutter, and since 1980, he owned and operated J.R. Smith Logging & Firewood in Anne Arundel County. He was a longtime member and deacon at South Shore Baptist Church in Crownsville, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family.
     Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sylvia Ellen O'Dell Smith; his sons, Joseph Russell (Nancy) Smith Jr., of Lusby, George Douglass (Terri) Smith of Glen Burnie and Daniel Scott Smith (Alicia) of Davidsonville; his siblings, James "Butch" (Christine) Smith of Callao, VA, Joan Katherine Smith Brown of Virginia and Patricia Ann Smith Gaines of Virginia; his grandchildren, Rebecca, Christopher, Joshua, Nathan, Nolan and Nelson; his great-grandchildren, Abigail and Ryleigh; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Marie Smith Greenwood and Mary Ellen Smith.
     Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joe's life on Saturday, April 2, 2022. Visitation is from 11am-1pm at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, with funeral service at 1pm. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis, MD 21401. Following the interment, a reception will be held at American Legion Post 226, 830 Central Avenue, Edgewater, MD 21037. The annual Davidsonville Green Expo, hosted by Homestead Gardens, features vendors and exhibitors who offer sustainable choices and information about environmentally-friendly products, lawn and garden techniques, agricultural practices, energy use, recycling, transportation options, and land use and conservation.

Michael Lawson Passes Away

We are sad to announce that on March 12, 2022 we had to say goodbye to Michael O. Lawson of Davidsonville, Maryland.  He was born Aug. 5, 1989 and was 32 years old..

Andrew Klenkel Passes Away

Joseph Wilson Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Joseph Holmer Wilson of Davidsonville, Maryland, who passed away on March 13, 2022, at the age of 74.

He was predeceased by : his parents, Charles Henry Wilson, Sr. and Elizabeth A. Parker; his wife Jean Marie Wilson; his children, Gloria Willis and Joseph Charles Wilson; and his siblings, Deanne Wilson and Jon Wilson.

He is survived by : his children, Annette McGowan of Annapolis, Cassandra Wilson of Baltimore, Maryland and Troy Love of Baltimore Maryland; his son-in-law Gregory McGowan Sr. of Baltimore Maryland; his grandchildren, Gregory McGowan Jr., Gary Spriggs, LaKissha McGowan, Crystal Watkins, Kortni Wilson, Kirnell Wallace Jr., Curtis Wallace, Travonne Gross, Kimberly Wallace, Demondra Smith, Erica Contee, JaQorie Love, Troy Love Jr., Mikaela Love and Makiya Love; his siblings, Charles, Ernest Wilson and Hertisene Wilson; and his caregiver Nicole McVea. He is also survived by 32 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Reese and Sons Mortuary (1922 Forest Dr, Annapolis, MD 21401). Jessica Beard Passes Away


    Jessica Stachitas Beard, age 30, passed away due to complications from metastatic breast cancer at her home the evening of February 28, 2022, surrounded by family and close friends.
    She was born July 11, 1991, in Silver Spring, Maryland to Kelly Shipler and Bruce Stachitas. She married Jon Beard, the love of her life, on the family farm on October 15, 2016. Jess graduated from Northeast High School in Pasadena, Maryland. She attended Towson University where she received a BA with a double major in criminology and psychology. She was a member of Alpha XI Delta sorority. Jess lived on the family farm in Davidsonville, with her husband Jon, their dogs Monkey and Myko and their cat Luna. She embraced life on the farm and developed an interest in both indoor and outdoor gardening. She had an intense love of family and was always happiest when her families got together. Jess lived life to the fullest under extraordinary circumstances. She was adventurous and fun loving. She was an avid Harry Potter fan, loved trips to Disney World and to the beach, and enjoyed dressing up to attend the Renaissance Festival with Jon and her family and friends. Jess's interests included sports and competition. She played four years of varsity soccer and lacrosse in high school. She and her husband enjoyed playing coed soccer, flag football, kick ball and pickleball. She was an avid Washington Capitals fan. Jess was active in the cancer support community. She was a passionate advocate for not only her own care but for the care of others. She connected with many people battling cancer across he country and in other countries as well and was an inspiration to everyone who read about her journey on her social media posts. She was active in the Ulman Foundation which is dedicated to creating a community of support for young adults with cancer and their loved ones. She advocated for raising awareness of Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer and supported fundraising for METAvivor Research and Support. She created the Disney inspired Respite Retreats Ears Over Fears program which helped children with cancer openly discuss and bravely face their fears.
     Jess is preceded in death by her paternal aunt Tracy Stachitas and her maternal great grandmothers June Zink and Virginia Shipler. In addition to her husband, Jon Beard, she is survived by her parents Kelly Shipler (Steve Jensen) and Bruce and Stacy Stachitas, grandparents Bruce and Carol Stachitas, Dianne Shipler, Irene (Judy) Purdy, and two brothers Bruce Stachitas III and Drew Stachitas. Jess was blessed with a big family which included aunts, uncles, cousins, in laws, nieces and nephews as well as many close friends who mourn her loss.
     The family requests that contributions be made in Jess's memory to METAvivor Research and Support Inc., the Ulman Foundation, or Respite Retreats Ears Over Fears Program. Family and friends gathered on the family farm for a celebration of her life on March 12. Burial will be private.

Cory Johnson Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Cory Johnson (Davidsonville, Maryland), who passed away on February 4, 2022, at the age of 44.  He was born Feb. 12, 1977.

He was predeceased by: his sister Tamiko Johnson Clay. He is survived by : his parents, William Johnson and Phyllis Johnson; his siblings, Michelle, Wendell, Leonard and Tina; and his close friends, Lakesha, Arthur, Wayne, Steven, Macalwin, Troy, Trent, Monica, Uneek and Wade. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Eleanor Bicknell Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Eleanor Frances Bicknell (Davidsonville, Maryland), born Oct. 7, 1936 in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, who passed away on January 14, 2022, at the age of 85, leaving to mourn family and friends. 

She was loved and cherished by many people including : her parents, Francis John and Ellen Elvira Lowe; her husband Clarence Bicknell; her daughters, Lynn Ellen (Paul Nowak) and Cindy Ann Bicknell (William Maxted); her siblings, Janice and Andrew Lowe; and her grandchildren, Andrew, Emily, Rachel, Claire and John. She was also cherished by her brother, daughters, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Maxwell Covington Passes Away


     Maxwell Hart Covington, Jr. "Max, Pop Pop", 87, a lifelong resident of Davidsonville MD, died on Monday, March 14 in Annapolis, MD due to heart disease.
    Born on February 4, 1935 in Washington, DC to the late Maria A. and Maxwell H. Covington, Sr., Max was a 1954 graduate of Annapolis High School and of the University of Maryland where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1961. Max was a lifelong farmer and also worked for Reliable Construction, Hopkins and Wayson and was a partner in the Subterranean Construction Company. He was a member of the Ruritan Club, Davidsonville United Methodist Church, Three Rivers Sportsmen Club and the Elks Club. Max enjoyed farming, hunting, golfing, following the stock market and investing.
    He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy J. Covington; his sons, Maxwell H. (Lisa) Covington, III of Corydon, IA and Allen P. (Erin) Covington of Davidsonville, MD and his grandchildren, Maxwell H., IV, Parker, Carolina, Cierra and Starr Covington. Special thanks to Dr. Romero, her assistant, Kim Miller and all of her staff who have cared for Max and Nancy for many years, the Bayada Nursing Staff who provided in home care and support and finally to the staff of Cardiology Associates in Annapolis.
     Friends are invited to celebrate Max's life on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 18 at 1 pm at Davidsonville United Methodist Church, 819 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD 21035. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Davidsonville Ruritan Club, 3358 Davidsonville Rd., Davidsonville, MD 21035 or Davidsonville United Methodist Church.

Letty Wotring Passes Away


    Letty Mae (Hutchinson) Wotring died peacefully at home in Heritage Harbour on February 27, 2022.
    She was born August 5, 1930 at her maternal grandparents home in Cumberland, MD to Lyman and Nellie (Sullivan) Hutchinson. Her father's employment resulted in Letty attending 34 schools across the United States before she graduated from Allegany High School, Cumberland, MD in 1948. She attended Radford College and later graduated from Catherman's Business School in Cumberland.
    Letty married Myron V. Wotring at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Cumberland, on July 26, 1950. While Myron was in the Air Force they were stationed at Andrews AFB and at Andersen AFB on the island of Guam. She and Myron lived in Frostburg, MD for four years while Myron completed his teacher's degree. Moving to Anne Arundel County in 1958 Letty raised her two children before entering the working world. Her career of 26 years with Anne Arundel Public Schools included ten years as a secretary at Davidsonville Elementary School and sixteen years in the Property Control unit at Riva Road headquarters, retiring in 1992.
     A loving mother and devoted wife, Letty leaves to mourn her husband, Myron, a son, John S. Wotring and a daughter Lisa R. Borgeson (Paul). She had four grandchildren: Leslie Amman (Steve), Nicholas Borgeson (Katie), Jillian Johnson (CJ), and Sean Wotring. The light of Letty's life was her five great grandchildren: Kaylee Tomlin, Olivia and Sophie Ammann, and Benjamin and Nathaniel Borgeson.
    A memorial gathering will be held at Lasting Tributes in Annapolis on Friday, March 11, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Crownsville, MD on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 1:00pm. Inurnment will be private. Cam Spencer Scores 28 in Season Finale

Cam Spencer of Davidsonville scored 28 pts in Loyola's loss to Boston University in the Patriot League tournament on March 3.  Cam also had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 2 steals.  This concludes Loyola's basketball season for this year.

Arthur Sands, III, Passes Away

     Arthur  Gorton Sands, III, 76, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD. Born on October 15, 1945 in Washington, DC to the late Jane and Arthur G. Sands Jr., Arthur grew up in Cheverly, MD and graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1963. He also attended Prince George's Community College and the University of Maryland in College Park, MD.
    Arthur was a long-time independent insurance broker until his semi-retirement in 2012. Arthur was passionate about his Irish traditions and culture. He played the rhythm bones in the traditional Irish pub band, TIPSC. He performed in various Irish festivals in the Delmarva region and marched in five Baltimore Saint Patrick's Day parades. Arthur was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time tending to his impressive vegetable garden. He transformed the field in his backyard into a forest from seed. He also enjoyed photography, entertaining friends and reading.
    Arthur is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda Sands of Davidsonville, MD; his daughter, Cara Sands of Tampa, FL and his sister, Donna (Jerry) Underkoffler of Shippensburg, PA.
    A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, MD. A public celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy, Pasadena, MD 21122. Online condolences may be made at:

Julie Marie Odziak-Crandell Passes Away


 

    Julie Marie Odziak-Crandell, 41, a resident of Riva, MD, and formerly of Orchard Park, NY, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home after a courageous battle with cancer on January 31, 2022.   Julie was a 2nd Grade teacher at Davidsonville Elementary School 
     She is survived by her beloved children, Dylan, Lea, and Lauren; her parents, James and Diane Bodziak; her brother, Jeffrey; and many loving relatives.
     She enjoyed reading, traveling, and fitness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 520 Oakwood Avenue, East Aurora, on Saturday, February 26, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122, or the Mom's Group of Holy Family Parish, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD 21035.
