A vehicle struck a fire engine with three firefighters
inside it Thursday morning while emergency crews tended to an injured person on
eastbound Route 50 in Davidsonville.
At 9
a.m., firefighters and paramedics aided someone suffering from a medical
emergency on Route 50 near the Patuxent River Road overpass when a vehicle hit
the back of the fire engine with the driver sustaining minor injuries.
The
engine was located behind firefighters and paramedics on Route 50, taking up
two lanes of traffic a normal practice to protect safety workers working at the
accident scene.

Alexandra is a graduate of the U. of MD and earned a
master's degree from Johns Hopkins. She works as a security specialist
for the federal government. Matthew earned both his undergraduate and
master's degrees from the U. of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is a
Lieutenant, JG, for the U. S. Naval Academy, where he is imployed on the
baseball coaching staff and as an instructor for physical education.

Edgewater announes the engagement of her daughter, Kristal Carlisle, to Edward
Jewell III, son of Edward and Anne Jewel of Lothian.
Kristal is also the
daughter of Kevin Carlisle of Davidsonville and step-daugher of Sam Traylor
of Edgewater.
The bride to be
draduated from the U. of MD with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and is
employed by Fannie Mae.
Edward attended AACC
and is a Fiber Optaics Technician for Verizon.
The couple met in
January 2005 and reside in Sunderland. A June 2012 wedding is planned on
Kent Island in Stevensville.

defense looking to improve on the 11.1 goals per game the unit surrendered last
year.
Henry, a Davidsonville
native and Severn
graduate, has made 26 starts in the team’s last 30 contests and was named a
captain in the offseason. Because of the Crusaders’ expected youth on defense,
Holy Cross coach Jim Morrissey said Henry must avoid last season’s habit of
collecting fouls.
“Dave’s got to stay out of the penalty box this year,” Morrissey said of Henry,
who led the team in both penalties (15) and penalty minutes (12½). “He’s tried
a couple different checks on the individual level so that he can stay out of
the penalty box and dump the stick-swinging. … So we’ve got to keep him out of
the penalty box and on the field. He’s our vocal leader back there. The guys
trust him.”

Hilda M. Zehner, 85, a 34 year resident of
Davidsonville, died February 13 at home after a lengthy illness. She was born
October 21, 1926.
As a homemaker, Hilda enjoyed cooking. She was a member of
the Women's Committee of Anne Arundel County Farm Bureau, and Our Lady of
Sorrows Catholic Church in West River.
Hilda is survived by her husband, Martin A. Zehner Jr.; a
stepson, Martin L. Zehner (Wynee); three step grandchildren; and two brothers.
There will be a visitation from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on
Thursday, February 16, at Hardesty Funeral Home, P.A., 12 Ridgely
Ave., Annapolis. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 17, at

A Davidsonville man was sentenced to a year and
a day in federal prison Tuesday for wire fraud stemming from a plot to defraud
lenders and a title insurance company of $2.8 million, Maryland's U.S.
Attorney's Office announced in a statement.
The sentence offers Stephen
J. Troese Sr., 72, the opportunity to have time knocked off his sentence for
good behavior. Troese, who pleaded guilty in October, has also been given three
years of supervised release following his incarceration.
According to the US Attorney's office, Troese worked as a title attorney and
managed several title companies that did business throughout the
Baltimore-Washington region. Employee mistakes and embezzlements caused escrow
accounts that Troese controlled to fall more than $2 million short by 2005.
Troese attempted to cover the shortfall by twice refinancing
his home and by using funds from new settlements. As the real estate market
soured, there were too few settlements to cover the shortages and a title
insurance company was forced to make payments, resulting in the $2.8 million
loss.
Two co-defendants in the case have also pleaded guilty. They
are scheduled to be sentenced this month.

Mary Grace Van Nest of Davidsonville, Maryland died at her residence on Tuesday
January 31, 2012. She was 69.
She was born
in Plainfield, New Jersey on September 15, 1942, the daughter of Walter J. and
Grace D. Paltz. She graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School,
class of 1960. She then received her bachelor's degree from Wheeling Jesuit
University in Wheeling, West Virginia. Mrs. Van Nest also graduated from the
school of Medical Records at the Graduate Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
She was very active in Girl Scouts from youth through
adulthood when she became a leader trainer. In 1982 she started working with
Navy Medical Records while her husband was stationed in Iceland. She continued
working in the local naval hospital at all of her husband's subsequent
assignments, ending her career at the then Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1998. She
was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville and the American
Health Information and Management Association. She was an avid quilter and an
accomplished Tole painter. She and her family enjoyed several years of
sponsoring Naval Academy Midshipmen.
She is survived by
her husband, Captain, Ronald L. Van Nest, NC, USN (Ret) of Middlesex, New
Jersey, whom she married on September 27, 1966; her daughter Charlene M. Van
Nest; one grandchild Amy G. Van Nest of Davidsonville and her brother
Christopher Paltz of Easton, Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by her son,
Ronald L. Van Nest, Jr., and her brothers Walter J. Paltz, Jr. of San Diego,
California and John Q. Paltz of Tampa, Florida.

Three Anne Arundel County teens traveling the wrong way toward oncoming traffic were killed early Saturday in a
head-on collision that also killed the second driver on US Route 50
near Davidsonville Road, Maryland State Police said.
Breanna Marie Franco, 18,
Brittany Ann Walker, 19, and Zachary Tyler Rose, 18, were in a vehicle
traveling west in an eastbound lane of Route 50 that struck a second vehicle
head on before 3:30 a.m., troopers said. The vehicle operated by the teens
briefly caught fire which had to be put out before removing the
victims. Police had received reports of a vehicle going the wrong
way on both US 50 and I 97.

Dorothy Daly-Funkhouser Dorothy "Dot" M. (Pouncey) Daly-Funkhouser,
99, a resident of Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village in Boonsboro, and formerly of Davidsonville, died peacefully January 20. Born on
January 21, 1912, in Moreland, GA, she was the daughter of the late John W. and
Rosa L. (Hindsman) Pouncey.
She was a member of the Holy
Family Catholic Church and Ladies Auxiliary in Davidsonville. In her
spare time, Dot enjoyed playing pinochle and lawn bowling.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert L.
Daly, who died in 1966; and her second husband, Robert E. Funkhouser, who died
in 1977. Dot is survived by her daughter, Marsha L. Politz of Frederick; her
sister, Olga Waite of Roanoke, VA; one grandson; three granddaughters; seven
great-grandsons and three great-grandaughters.
Services will be held privately and at the convenience of

Maureen R. Bowers, 51, of Davidsonville, died
January 23 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born Dec. 27, 1960, in
Baltimore, the daughter of Lillian A. Pearson Shanahan and John E. Shanahan of
Catonsville. Maureen worked as a receptionist for Total
Electric in Upper Marlboro and prior to that worked as an office manager for
Appraisal Services. She graduated from Randallstown High School and enjoyed
pets, cooking, home decorating and the Ravens.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John A. Shanahan
Jr. She is survived by her husband, Gregory A. Bowers; three sisters, Kathleen
Cooper of Kent Island, Colleen Manasen of Catonsville, and Eileen Overfelt and
husband Walter A. of Sykesville; four nieces, Amber Watson, Krystal Cooper,
Melissa Cooper and Brianna Chaney; and two nephews, Justin and Nicholas
Overfelt.

DAVIDSONVILLE,
Md. (WUSA) -- A driver received minor injuries after his car struck a
house on Thursday morning at about 1.
According to Anne Arundel Fire Division Chief Michael Cox, a sedan left the
roadway, came through a parking lot of a gas station and then hit another vehicle
before striking a single family home in the 600 block of Central Ave W in the
Davidsonville area. The car was resting inside the house.
Cox says no
one was at home at the time of the incident.
The male
driver was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis with minor
injuries, according to Cox.
The Special
Ops division responded to the scene and the collapse unit shored up load-baring
walls to make it safe for a search. They searched areas around and under vehicle, but found nothing.
Anne Arundel
Police are investigating the cause of the incident.

Work being done at Roedown Farm in Davidsonville is not sufficiently completed
to run the races. The committee is looking at the possibility of holding

Police have
reopened the westbound lanes of Route 50 in Davidsonville
after an overnight collision between a car and a tractor trailer shut
down those lanes for hours. Traffic is getting by slowly and delays are
heavy.
Maryland State Police
say a vehicle was stopped, possibly disabled, partially in the travel lane and
partially on the shoulder on westbound Route 50 just before Davidsonville Road
(Rt. 424) when it was hit by a tractor trailer shortly after 2:00 Tuesday
morning.
The driver of
the vehicle that was struck has been taken to shock trauma in
critical condition. A passenger in the stopped car went to Prince George's
Hospital Center. The tractor trailer driver was not transported to the
hospital.
Police say this
stretch of Route 50 is particularly dark, which may have contributed to the
crash. The road was completely closed until just before 6:00 a.m.
No charges
are pending against tractor trailer driver.

Margret Lund Jefferson, 89, of Davidsonville died at Washington Hospital
Center, Washington, DC, on January 10 of congestive heart failure. Margret was
born on September 17, 1922 in Centerfield, UT to Margarette Williams Lund and
C. Dewey Lund.
Margret began work with the United States Army in Utah,
where she met her husband who was in active service. They married in 1944. With
two young children in tow, they moved to Collingswood, New Jersey in 1955.
Margret worked for a local Senator there for several years, while Bruce pursued
his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad. They later transferred, and claimed
Maryland as their home. Margret worked for and received many accolades from her
position at Kimmel Furniture for 12 years as a Sales Manager, and also from the
Internal Revenue Service in the Office of Personnel from which she retired. She
moonlighted for many years as a caterer for weddings, anniversaries and many
other celebrations.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints and served in many significant leadership positions that
included but were not limited to President of the Relief Society and President
of the Primary. She served as a support to her husband during his tenure at the
Church in the Bishopric and in the Bishop's Storehouse. Margret and Bruce
shared a mutual love of antiquing, and spent many, many years combing through
shops up and down the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Margret was an avid reader,
gardener, and birder, and enjoyed taking care of animals. She loved
opportunities to explore and learn new things, and loved to entertain people in
her home. She enjoyed spending time with her German Shepherd, Roxy.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bruce
Jefferson; one brother; and two sisters. She is survived by two sons, Paul
Bruce Jefferson and daughter-in-law Barbara of Chesapeake Beach, and Niel Brent
Jefferson and daughter-in-law Kathleen of New Market; ten grandchildren;
numerous step grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three nephews; one
niece; and by many friends and church members.
A brief
viewing will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 16 at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints, Bowie, 16621 Sylvan Drive until a funeral service
and celebration of Margret's life begins at 12 p.m. Interment Lakemont Memorial

Kenneth J. Carr, a lifelong resident of
Davidsonville, died January 10 from a lengthy illness at his home, with his
family by his side. Born September 3, 1923 in Riva, Kenneth graduated from
Annapolis High School in 1941.
He served his country in the Army Air Corps and then the Air
National Guard, being involved in both World War II and the Korean War. Kenneth was a
civilian employee for the Department of the Air Force, retiring from the 89th
M.A.W. Andrews AFB, Camp Springs. Kenneth was a member of the Anne Arundel
County Farm Bureau, the Davidsonville Ruritan and the Anne Arundel County Soil
Conservation. He enjoyed collecting hats and arrowheads, but his lifelong
passion was tobacco farming.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence G. "Boots"
Carr; one son, Henry "Pete" (Carol H.) Carr of Davidsonville; two
grandchildren, Chad J. Carr of Indian Head and Kristopher M. Carr of
Davidsonville; and one great-grandchild, Dixie Lee Carr.
Friends are invited to attend Kenneth's Memorial Service at
7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 13, at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons

"Pat" Abend, a 59-year resident of Davidsonville, and previously of
Baltimore County, died on December 30 of natural causes at the Washington
Hospital Center. Pat was born January 6, 1932 in Baltimore to the late Howard
and Alice Mace.
She was co-owner of Frank Abend Landscaping and enjoyed
bowling and sewing.
Pat is survived by her husband of 59 years, Frank Abend of

A proposal to relieve overcrowding at
Central Elementary School through redistricting will be considered at
Wednesday's Board of Education meeting.
Under the plan, more than 100 students
from Central would be split between Davidsonville and Mayo elementary schools.
Edgewater Elementary School was not included in the plan because it is in line
for construction improvements.
Redistricting is needed because Central
is overcrowded while desks remain open at Davidsonville and Mayo, officials
said. Central's capacity is 767 students; it is expected to have 840 by 2013.
Meanwhile, the capacity of Davidsonville
is 727 and that of Mayo is 352. By 2013, those schools are projected to have
556 and 296 students, respectively.
A report from a committee of community
residents included objections from parents requesting that their children not
be moved from Central.
But "this has been less contentious
process than most" redistricting proposals, said Chuck Yocum, who leads
the redistricting process for the schools.
The three schools are similar in test
scores and demographic measurements, he said. Also, all those who will be
fifth-grade students next year at Central would have the option of completing
their final year there.
The plan would:
- Move students living along Muddy Creek Road, down to and including
Wolfe's Reserve, from Central to Mayo.
- Redistrict students living on Fiddlers Hill Road and those east of
Muddy Creek Road and south of Central Avenue, as well at those in River
Club Estates and those along Camp Letts Road, from Central to Mayo.
- Move the Waterford, Annapolis Landing and Berkshireneighborhoods
from Central to Davidsonville.
Although at least 22 percent of
households in the Annapolis Landing community signed a petition against
redistricting, community members also asked that their children be kept
together in the same elementary school, Yocum said.
The proposal calls for students in those
neighborhoods and any students living along the south side of Riva Road to be
moved to Davidsonville Elementary.

$1,000 scholarships from various church committees.
Jenna Rice received the Rev. Paul Cummins
Scholarship for 2011. Doris Cummins presented the scholarship. She graduated
from South River High School in 2011 and is currently attending Anne Arundel
Community College.

A 68-year-old woman
was rushed to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore on
Wednesday morning after she was kicked in the face by a horse, county fire
officials said.
Just after 10:30, rescue personnel found the woman in the
400 block of Beards Creek Drive off Beards Point Road in
Davidsonville. She was taken to trauma center by ambulance with
serious injuries. Further details on the incident were not
available.

The pair of pot-bellied pigs will eat
just about anything, warm or cold, said Martin Hoy, who owns the farm. They
especially love spaghetti.
"You actually have to watch how
much you feed them because, if you don't, they won't stop eating," Hoy said.
Stimpson and Ren - whose quirky names
hearken to the 1990s Nickelodeon cartoon "The Ren & Stimpy Show"
- are eating much better these days than they were in September, when they were
forced to fend for themselves near the Baltimore Washington Parkway in
Linthicum.
The county's Office of Animal Control
believes a previous owner abandoned the pigs in late August or early September.
The animals were spotted numerous times in a business park on Hammonds Ferry
Road, but eluded Animal Control and Department of Natural Resources officers
for weeks. One pig was finally caught Sept. 22 and the other was caught Sept.
28.
After the animals were brought to the
county shelter in Millersville, employees named them Miss Piggy and Kermit and
worked with New Jersey-based Pig Placement Network to find new owners.
Ultimately, Dave Blackburn and Debra
Cory, a couple that lives on the farm with Hoy, adopted the pigs. Blackburn
works in the business park and often saw the pigs on the property bordering the
parkway.

David William Geoffrey
King, 80, a 36-year resident of Davidsonville, died peacefully from cancer on
December 3, surrounded by family.
Born in Southport, England to the late Samuel and Elsa King,
David served in the Royal Air Force developing radar technology at the end of
WorldWar II. He spent most of his career in satellite communications and
developing security systems for Homeland Security.
He enjoyed cooking, was an avid reader, enthusiastic
Liverpool soccer fan, liked woodworking and model building, and loved fishing.
David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rose E. King;
four sons, Richard, John, Paul, and William; daughter, Jacqueline Payne; four
brothers, Michael King of York, England, Thomas King of Devon, England, Robert
King of York, England and Jim King of South Africa; six grandsons, John Robert,
Zyryll, Tyler, Gabe, Brandon, and Scott Payne; and three granddaughters,
Samantha, Nicole and Emily King.

Dillon Thomas Moran, 16, a
lifelong resident of Davidsonville, died on December 3.
Born in Annapolis, on May 19, 1995, Dillon had attended the
Severn School since the eighth grade. He had a great love for all types of
music and played multiple instruments. He was the bass guitarist for the Severn
School band that performed in the Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands
competition. Dillon showed great aptitude in the technological field and loved
any type of gadget. He was looking forward to studying engineering in college.
A passionate athlete, He loved being part of a team. He grew up playing soccer
and lacrosse for the Davidsonville Gators. He was currently a member of the
Severn School men's varsity soccer team, was captain of the men's JV lacrosse
team and played club lacrosse for Team Smartlink. A member of Holy Family
Catholic Church in Davidsonville, Dillon loved wakeboarding, snow boarding,
spending time with his family and friends and was loved by all who knew him.
Dillon was preceded in death by his grandfather,
"Johnny" Carr and his grandmother, Helen Moran. He is survived by his
parents, Martin and Barbara Moran; three brothers, 2nd Lt. Nicholas P. Moran,
Cody S. Moran and Kyle M. Moran all of Davidsonville; his grandmother, Barbara
Carr; his grandfather, Frank Moran; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

On Monday at 1:27 p.m., a 23-year-old
man was jogging near Davidsonville Park in the 3000 block of Patuxent River
Road when he saw a man handling three dogs on retractable leashes, police said.
One of the dogs was able to get free
and attacked the jogger.
During the attack, the handler fled
with one of the three dogs, leaving the other two behind.
The jogger was eventually able to run
away and call police. He was later taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center and was
treated for wounds to his arms and legs.
According to the jogger and other
witnesses, at least two of the dogs had been fighting at some point.
Animal Control responded and were
able to find one of the two dogs, described as a white, brown and black
American Bulldog mix.
The dog had visible wounds indicative
of having been in a dog fight and was bleeding.
The second dog fled the area but was
located and confined in a wooded area by a citizen. The dog was extremely
aggressive and had to be tranquilized by Animal Control officers. The dog,
described as a white and black American bulldog mix, also had wounds suggesting
it been in a fight.
The dog later died en route to Animal
Control.
The dog handler who fled the area is
described as a black male in his mid 20's with some facial hair, wearing a
green jacket, sunglasses and a Green Bay Packers hat that was recovered at the
scene. He was possibly seen leaving the area in a gold-colored Dodge minivan
with white logos on the sides traveling south on Patuxent River Road.
Anyone with information on the
location of the third dog or on the identity or whereabouts of the dog handler
that fled the scene is asked to contact Animal Control Officer Serena Beckner
at 410-222-8900 ext. 3008.

A woman was
robbed of an unknown amount of cash while she was pulled over along Governor
Bridge Road near Blackberry Lane in Davidsonville on Sunday evening, according
to Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy.
Police said
the victim pulled over around 6:19 p.m. on Sunday to type an address into her
GPS. The 21-year-old Bowie woman told police that shortly thereafter, a white
compact car pulled over in front of her. According to the statement, the driver
of the white car was a woman.

As the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way through the
streets of New York City this morning, an Archbishop Spalding High School
senior will ride into the national spotlight.

Jordan Silver of Davidsonville is one of four lead singers
performing the opening number in this year's parade.
Perched on a float above thousands of onlookers, Silver and three
fellow members of New York-based Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Camp will be
performing a new song written specifically for the parade.
Following the opening, Silver and the other students will make
their way to the top of the parade route and travel through Manhattan,
eventually escorting Santa Claus into Herald Square. The parade will be
broadcast on NBC.
"It's going to be awesome to perform in front of millions of
people," Silver said.
Silver and his family left for New York on Friday afternoon. After
spending a weekend in the city, Jordan has been busy this week with parade
rehearsals. He and his Stagedoor Manor colleagues had only three days to learn
the new song and dance routine.
Despite the large audience, Silver isn't nervous. He has been
acting since he was 4 or 5 and has been in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
before, though not as a lead singer. He marched in the parade as a member of
Stagedoor Manor in 2009.
Silver's mom, Louise, said she stopped getting nervous about her
son's performances years ago.
"Now it's just pure exhilaration," she said.
Louise and Bruce Silver, Jordan's father, began taking Jordan and
his older sister, Geri, to on-stage productions when they were children. The
couple never pushed their children to participate in the arts, but the pair
developed an affinity anyway.
Geri is a senior at Ithaca College in New York and maintains an
interest in theatre. Jordan has taken singing and acting lessons, performed in
countless on-stage productions and attended Stagedoor Manor camps for the
better part of a decade. He plans to attend camp next summer for the eighth
time after he graduates from Spalding.
Spalding principal Lewis Van Wambeke will be sad to see Silver
leave.
"He's a phenomenal young man," Van Wambeke said.
"He's very talented. He gives a lot of his time and energy to the
school."
Silver hopes to pursue a career as a performer. He is looking at
musical theatre programs at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and
University of Michigan.
He also is considering an English degree, but his ultimate goal is
to perform, whether it's acting or singing or playing his guitar.
"Acting is the most fun you can have because you don't have
to worry about being yourself," he said. "You can let everything else
go away and perform."

United Methodist Church, was recently awarded the Annapolis District Council on
Youth Ministries Youth Recognition Award for his outstanding leadership and
community-enriching activities.
The award includes citations and recognition from Gov. Martin
O'Malley, the Maryland General Assembly, Anne Arundel County, Annapolis Mayor
Josh Cohen, the Anne Arundel County Council, the Annapolis District
Superintendent of the Baltimore-Washington United Methodist Conference, the
Annapolis District Council on Youth Ministries and Anne Arundel County Public
Schools.
Chad has attended the Davidsonville United Methodist Church for
over 10 years. He's been an active member in both worship and service and is
involved in many activities through the church. He has a tremendous ability to
communicate effectively with both the youth group and adult leaders, bridging
the gap between generations and resulting in youth programs that push in a
positive, faith-based direction.
As the church embarked on a "green" initiative, Chad
spearheaded a youth-initiated recycling mission. Additionally, Chad has
coordinated fundraising efforts with local organizations to raise money for
youth service projects, specifically the Appalachia Service Project.
Chad is enrolled in the STEM program for science, technology,
engineering and math and boasts an impressive 4.1 GPA. As part of his school's
multicultural Success Team, he is involved in a number of community service projects
every year, including Harvest for the Hungry and Soles4Souls. He is a member of
his high school's National Honor Society and the Johns Hopkins Center for
Talented Youth, and he was recently selected for the United States Coast Guard
Academy Introduction Mission. Chad is the son of Chuck and Tricia Moeslein of
Davidsonville.

A 70-year-old man was
seriously injured in a welding accident Friday in Davidsonville, according to the county Fire
Department.
The man was working with
welding equipment at a business on the 700 block of Central Avenue when his
clothing caught fire shortly after noon, said fire department spokesman
Division Chief Michael Cox. He could not confirm which business the incident
occurred in.
Others in the area were
able to help put the fire out, but the man was burned on over 18 percent of his
body.
He was airlifted by
state police helicopter to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore
with serious, but nonlife-threatening injuries.

William C. Sunderland, 82, a resident of Edgewater for over 50 years,
died November 15 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born August 18, 1929 in
Bristol.
He worked as a federal government
employee, then retired. He was a member of the Davidsonville
United Methodist Church and the Davidsonville Ruritan Club. He enjoyed hunting
and was a Redskin's fan.
He was preceded in death by his
wife, Virginia and brother, Ralph Sunderland. He is survived by two daughters,

AA Co. police arrested Tierre Thomas Wallace, 35, and Jason Jamal Edmonds
at a home in the 1500 block of Gov. Bridge Road in Davidsonville. During a

WILLIAM WESLEY "BILL" NEAL, JR. was born on
December 27, 1941. He died at his home in Arnold, MD on November 5, 2011 of
natural causes.
He was the oldest son of the late
William W. and Doris M. Neall of Davidsonville. He is survived by his
children, William Neall III, Brian Neall, Michael Neall and Amanda Neall
Ritchey. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Neall and his sister, Susan
Neall Murnane. He has 9 grandchildren, Michael, Sabrina, Hannah, Brian, Sarah,
Troy, Madison, Grace and Charlotte and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was a top salesman at Mazo
Lerch and Company in the 60's and 70's but was best known for running the Davidsonville
Storewhich he purchased from his father in 1977. He was a quiet man who was
generous to strangers and friends alike. He was a 32 Degree Mason and a member
Annapolis Masonic lodge. In his later years he enjoyed traveling to Ireland,
the Netherlands and Costa Rica with his brother-in-law, Timothy Murnane, and a
group of close friends. He enjoyed afternoons at the Green Turtle in Edgewater
and Mike's Crab House in Riva.

Betty Poston Tucker, 80, of Davidsonville, died November 5 after a battle
with pneumonia. She was born on December 21, 1930 in Washington, D.C. to the
late Sumpter Silcott and Ida Bell Thomas Poston.
The youngest of nine children, she
attended Eastern High School in Washington D.C. After her graduation in 1947,
she went to work for the District of Columbia Government.
In September 1952 Betty met and
married Ellsworth Tucker. She then moved her career to NSA where she retired in
1976. After retirement she worked part-time for the A.A. County Recreation and
Parks Department.
She was a strong supporter and
leader for women's athletics. Betty was instrumental in the development and
establishment of the Davidsonville Athletic Club and the girls' basketball and
softball programs. She was an avid bridge player, achieving the recognition of
"Life Master". She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends and
never missed a Saturday yard sale where she looked for the many bargains to be
had. She loved eating crabs and was a diehard Redskin fan.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Ellsworth "Whitey" Tucker; sisters, Virginia
"Jinx" White and Jeanne Viqueria; and brothers, John W. Poston and
Robert "Bobby" Poston. She is survived by her daughter, Susan K.
Hamilton, and her husband, Greg, of Davidsonville; two sisters, Doris P. Henry
of California, and Gertude P. Shymansky, of Edgewater; brother, Richard S.
Poston of Davidsonville and grandchildren, Jeffrey T. Hamilton and Whitney T.
Hamilton, both of Davidsonville; as well as many nieces and nephews.

SteveFidyk, of Davidsonville, is the conductor of the
Chesapeake Youth Symphony
Orchestra's new jazz ensemble - the
organization's first new group in seven years.
Fidyk wants
to hold auditions for the roughly 20 spots in the ensemble starting this month
and hopes to have a group assembled by the end of the year. Weekly rehearsals
would begin in January, with a first concert planned for the CYSO's March gala.
Ideally,
Fidyk would like the ensemble to consist of five trumpets, five saxophones and
four trombones - along with a bass, piano, drums, guitar, percussion and a
vocalist. The group would focus on big band classics by luminaries such as Duke
Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman.

Anne Arundel County Police responded at about 8:30 a.m. Friday
(Oct. 28) to a report of a car crash on Patuxent River Road and Double Gate
Road in Davidsonville. When they got there, police found a crashed white Dodge
Neon off the road, in the woods. The car had significant damage from hitting
the tree.

A Davidsonville man has
plead guilty and was convicted of wire fraud in a mortgage fraud scheme.
Stephen J. Troese Sr., 72, practiced as a title attorney and
controlled several title companies that operated in the Baltimore,
Annapolis and Washington areas, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in
Baltimore, which announced the plea deal. Because of bookkeeping
errors and embezzlement, the firm's escrow accounts were depleted as new
funds were diverted to pay off older mortgages. With the recent economic
downturn, the new incoming funds were not enough to keep up the juggling
of funds.

The Arundel Volunteer Fire Dept., located at
2380 Davidsonville Road, continues to hold sandwiches sales on Saturdays during
the fall. Each at. they fire up the grill and serve fresh pit-beef, ham
and turkey sandwiches. The meat is smoked all morning and served on freshly
baked rolls. Sandwiches are usually ready for sale by 10:30 a.m. and cost $6.
Soda, water and chips are also available. There are picnic tables on site and
there is always a firefighter available to give a tour of the station and the
fire engines. All the proceeds from the sales go directly to AVFD.

The tropical storms
Irene and Lee dumped up to 50 times the normal amount of rain into the Patuxent
River causing one dock to break free of its moorings and hea downstream until
getting snagged on a log jam. The river and trail keeping team called
Patuxent Roughnecks had to find a way to bring the dock back upstream to

Victor John Krisko "Vic", 81, a seven
year resident of Davidsonville, previously of Sarasota, FL, died Wednesday,
October 19 at his son's residence, of congestive heart failure, after a two
month illness.
Born October 9, 1930 in
Greensburg, PA to the late John Krisko and Angeline Hollick Krisko, he
graduated from Greensburg High School and attended California University of
Pennsylvania. Victor served in the U.S. Navyas an Electronics Technician Third
Class from September 20, 1950 to June 29, 1954; receiving the Korean Service
Medal, United Nations medal, Good Conduct medal, National Defense medal and in
2002, Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Mr. Krisko worked as an engineer for
IBM, retiring after 21 years. His memberships included American Legion Post 226
in May, Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3233 in Sarasota, FL and AmVets
Post 99 in Vandalia, OH. Victor enjoyed playing Golf, World War II History,
the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates and was an avid cross-word puzzle solver.

Victor was predeceased by his wife, Barrie Jean Reed Krisko and a sister,
Josephine Wisneski. He is survived by two sons, Thomas A. Krisko of Greenwood,
DE and Robert S. Krisko and his wife Alyssa of Davidsonville; two daughters,
Valerie J. Kutchma of Hurrah, OK and Kimberly A. Nicholas and her husband
Richard of Houston, DE; two brothers, Robert S. Krisko and Gregory Nieto, both
of Lahaska, PA; a sister, Ann Adams of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren,
Michael A. Kutchma of Moore, OK, Thomas J. Krisko of Wappingers Falls, NY,
Christopher J. Kutchma of Beacon, NY, Jessica L. Krisko of Poughkeepsie, NY and
Joshua D. Nicholas and Heather A. Nicholas, both of Houston, DE; also survived
by one great-grandson, Frederick Krisko.

At Davidsonville Elementary School earlier this week, 14 acting
students made up their own creatures. They gave life to "squirms" and
"gacks" and played a game with them.
Next up was an art activity, then a talk by instructor Tyler
Herman about the various acting skills they used in the initial exercise. It
was the third of eight weekly, after-school sessions.
"It's incredibly fun," said Herman, of Washington, D.C.
"Their imaginations are boundless. My job ... is to say nothing's too
much; nothing's too outlandish."
Tommy O'Brien certainly agreed. He was hopping around frantically
and waving his arms while pretending to be one of the creatures. "I like
this class," said the 8-year-old. "We get to act and play fun
games."
Fellow third graders Katherine Campo and Lillian Baker said
pretending to be someone or something other than themselves was challenging,
but also very enjoyable.
"I learned that when you're acting and you're a different
character, sometimes you have to change your voice," Lillian said.
It's especially hard to try to talk like a boy, she said.
"For us girls, it's hard to act like a boy."

- County Executive John R. Leopold today announced the appointment of former
Army Sgt. Kenneth W. Thompson as Chairman of the Veteran Affairs Commission.
“Ken Thompson has a distinguished record in the
military and in business,” County Executive Leopold said. “I am confident that
he will enhance the performance of a commission that has already made strides
in improving the lives of our active and retired military personnel.”
Thompson, a Davidsonville resident, was most
recently a Senior Project Engineer for TurningPoint Global Solutions, Inc. He
previously worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Treasury and
the Secret Service. He holds a master’s degree from George Washington
University and an associate’s degree from Montgomery College. Thompson is
a veteran of the Vietnam War who specialized in communications and
intelligence.
Working with the Veteran Affairs Commission and
the County Council,
County Executive Leopold has helped establish
hiring preferences for
veterans and provided funding for treatment of
post traumatic stress and drug addiction. The 13-member Veteran Affairs
Commission is a forum for all Anne Arundel County veterans of military service.
It is charged with identifying opportunities to improve financial and other
assistance to veterans, including higher education and healthcare, as well as
providing statistics and organizing events for our troops and veterans.

Tommy Redmiles, a resident of Davidsonville, passed away at age 26 this past March
from complications due to Crohn's disease. His family and friends
found comfort in showing their support with donations to the Crohn's and
Colitis Foundation of America in his memory.
On Oct. 14, the Thomas H. Redmiles Foundation will present the
T-Red Memorial Golf Classic at Bay Hills Golf Club, 545 Bay Hills Drive in
Arnold. Proceeds will be donated to CCFA. The public is invited to attend and
participate.
The tournament will be a four-person scramble with a tee-time at 1
p.m. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. The $100 fee per golfer includes greens
and cart fees; hot dog lunch at registration, soft drinks, water and domestic
beers on the course; dinner catered by Bayside Bull; a polo shirt and goodie
bag; and one voucher for a full round of golf to be used at a later date.
Highlights include a hole-in-one contest for a new car donated by

The Davidsonville Ruritan Club recently
held their awards dinner to present five scholarships to Davidsonville students
and to announce the winners of the Mildred Watkins fifth-grade essay contest.
Dr. Richard Garden, chairman of the
scholarship committee, sent out scholarship applications to school guidance
counselors who nominated candidates. (The applications are also available on
the Davidsonville Ruritan's website in the winter.) All scholarships are
reviewed in such manner that no one knows whose application is whose until
after a winner has been selected.
This year, five students were awarded
scholarships of $1,000 per year for four years. The winning students are Sarah Jentilett, Jessica
D'Ambrosio, Megan Hensley, Shelby Heinecke and Alyson Lombardo.

Mr. Dwyer was a Real Estate Attorney who had a passion for

Under cloudy skies hundreds of Holy Family
church members enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship and fun while feasting on
hotdogs, hamburgers and delicious sides and deserts prepared by the
parishioners themselves on Sept. 18.
Children gleefully jumped around in a horse-shaped moon
bounce, tossed bean bags, had their faces painted, decorated pumpkins and
crafted scarecrows with their parents at the western themed event while
Deacon Tom Beales treated parishioners to an old-fashioned wagon ride around
church grounds.

The All Hallows’ Parish was established officially in 1692. The community
of All Hallows’ dates back to 1669 with the earliest records on baptisms that
were celebrated. The church itself was built in 1729. They maintain two
historic buildings and hold services at both The Brick Church in Edgewater, as
well as The Chapel in Davidsonville.
The Reverend Alistair So came
to this congregation in early 2008 from a position as Associate Pastor at St. Martins in-the-Field Church in Severna Park.
He was raised in Hong Kong and educated in an Anglican School within the
British school system. He learned English, but continued to
speak the native languages of his parents. An only child, So first came to live
abroad as a college undergraduate at American University where he received a
Bachelor of Science in biology. He then attended graduate school at Georgetown
where he earned a Master of Science degree in microbiology.

The Davidsonville United Methodist Church, 819
W. Central Ave., will have its annual Autumn Jubilation and BBQ Festival from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24.

available for sale include: apple-themed baked goods table, bags of orchard
fresh apples and apple cider. The bags of apples and apple cider are from
Brown's Orchard in Loganville, Pa. The Tongues of Fire BBQ ministry team will
serve smoked and slow-cooked pulled pork, pulled chicken, beef brisket and
pit-cooked half-chickens. Beverages include fresh apple cider, sodas and
bottled water.
Annapolis Big
Band Caliente, which plays all styles of Latin music as well as the traditional
big band songs with a twist, will entertain with their swinging tunes. Also,
the Chesapeake Pickers will keep your feet stomping.
The youth
group will be offering games for young children. Local vendors will be selling
a wide variety of goods including hand-crafted items. Vendors interested in

Salisbury senior attacker Trish
DiGirolomo was named to the 2011 ECAC Division III South All-Star team. The
Davidsonville resident, who was also a first team All-American, scored 38 goals
and dished off 53 assists for a team-leading 91 points last season. The
Archbishop Spalding product ranked seventh nationally in assists per game
(2.79) in helping the Sea Gulls (19-3) capture their seventh straight Capital
Athletic Conference championship.

Katcef Bros. of Annapolis held their first
Harvest Beer Festival at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville on Sept. 17 which
attracted more than 700 brew lovers.
"I'm a beer enthusiast,"
said Bob Childs of Annapolis, sipping a pint outside the tasting tents. "I
make beer, I drink beer, so to come to an event like this ... when there's a
tasting at a store, the selection is usually pretty limited."
Not so at this festival, which showcased about 50 different
beers from a dozen breweries. The most popular, according to some event
organizers, was the Box Car Pumpkin Porter from Charlottesville, Va.-based
Starr Hill Brewery.
Katcef Bros., an Annapolis beer distributor, organized the
festival to benefit the Scenic Rivers Land Trust.
"There will be one next year," said Neil Katcef,
the company's president. "I'm overwhelmed by the turnout. It's so much
more than we expected."

From The Capital
AA Co. Police had arrested three men early
Thursday morning after being called to a theft in progress. Police
were called at 1:28 a.m. by a resident who saw men putting items from a
neighbor's yard in Herald Harbor into a pickup, which sped off with at least
one suspect in the back of the truck. Police set up a perimeter on
the few roads leading out of the area.
Officers spotted the Ford F-350 on River
Road. The truck then turned onto Generals Highway. Police pulled
the truck over at the intersection of Crownsville Road and Generals Highway.
Two men were in the back of the truck, along with numerous tools and spools of
wire.
Police said they were able to
identify some of the tools as being stolen from a truck parked in the 300 block
of Walnut Trail in Herald Harbor. They also said they found that some of the
tools had been taken from a truck on First Street off South Haven Road.
All
three men in the truck were arrested and charged with fourth-degree burglary,
theft, destruction of property and rogue and vagabond, police said.
Arrested were the driver, George
Graff, 53, of Flanders Lane in Harwood, Benjamin Ponta, 24, of Bowie, and
Christopher Stafford, 25, of Governor Bridge Road in Davidsonville.

Henry Edward "Dick" Gertz Jr., 80, a 65-year resident of
Davidsonville, died September 15 from complications of cancer.
He was born Feb. 8, 1931, to the
late Henry Edward and Lillian Pullman Gertz. He graduated from Arundel
High School in 1948 and continued to work on the family farm. In 1951,
he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Korea as the
war was winding down. After his service, Dick was employed as a mechanic
for Capital Airlines at Washington International Airport. He then worked
as a night manager at the Dixie Bar-B-Que Restaurant at Waysons Corner in
Lothian. Later, Dick owned and operated the Meade Superette Store in
Odenton. After selling his business, Dick worked at Rips Restaurant in Bowie as
a manager until his retirement in 1995.
Throughout his life, Dick was
fascinated with airplanes. In his youth, he spent his spare time assembling
model airplanes. Dick became a licensed pilot and entertained his family and
friends for many years with his airplane rides. Dick also enjoyed cooking,
reading, hunting, growing cactuses in his greenhouse, and gardening and was an
avid bowler. He also enjoyed sharing his homegrown vegetables with family and
friends and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Dick was a charter member of St.
Paul's Lutheran Church of Gambrills and Crofton.
In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his brother, Gilbert Roy "Jack" Gertz. He is
survived by his wife of 30 years, Janet Adamson Gertz; three daughters, Cheryl
(Jim) Washington of Mt. Airy, Cindy (Terry Lewis) Gertz of Leicester, NC and
Betina Jones of West Palm Beach, FL; son, Bruce (Marie) Gertz of Davidsonville;
sister, Lorraine Clow of Davidsonville; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Ryan
Washington of Mt. Airy.

Vernon "Jerry" Nicholson, 64, of Davidsonville, died
September 10.
He was born Dec. 13, 1946, in
Astoria, OR, the son of the late Archie and Margaret Nicholson. He was raised
in Long Beach, WA, and graduated from the University of Washington prior to serving
his country in the U.S. Army. Jerry worked for McKenna, Long & Aldridge in
Washington, DC. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of
29 years, Sharon Nicholson; son, Jeffery of Davidsonville;
stepdaughters, Melissa Wagner ofDavidsonville and
Kathleen Gilmore of Ft. Hood, TX; three grandchildren, Adam, Jacklyn and Dylan
Gilmore, all of Ft. Hood, TX; and sister, Marietta Bergman of Port Townsend,
WA.

Homestead Gardens will host the Third
Annual Annapolis Tomato Festival on Sept 10 from noon until 6 p.m. This
family-friendly event will feature three different contests: the Chesapeake
Chili Cook-off, the Salsa Competition and the Ledo Fastest Pizza Eating
Contest. Registration for all contests is open to the public; restaurants and
individuals are welcome to enter the cooking contests.
There also will be samplings of
a wide variety of tomatoes as well as different tomato-based foods. We will
have live music and cooking demonstrations throughout the day.
Tickets: Individuals are $10
each.
A portion of the profits from
the Tomato Festival and Chili Cook-off will go to support Save the Coconuts, an
Annapolis-based nonprofit organization.

Chas Thompson, who co-owns the
Davidsonville Market Deli & Pizza with his wife Frannie, said much of the
store's success lies in its blend of a friendly atmosphere, a loyal customer
base, product variety and homemade goods, including everything from pizza to
cupcakes to egg salad sandwiches.
"We don't
want to be a 7-Eleven. We don't want to be a High's," said Thompson, who
has owned the market for six years.
"People
want good food and quality food, and they're willing to pay for it," he
said.
Thompson said
his daughter will likely take over the market, which is now about 100 years
old.
