Addict Response Center At CCF

From the Capital-Gazette:
A local church has created a program to assist the families, friends and loved ones of addicts.
While many programs and rehabilitation centers have sprung up to aid addicts, the Addiction Response and Resource Center in Davidsonville is designed to support those around the addict.
Pastor Christian Hipsky, who leads outreach and environments at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship in Davidsonville, said, as a church they were seeking a way to respond to the community.
“What can we do about this?” he asked. “How do we help the family? If an addict goes through recovery and then returns to the same environment as before, the cycle will just repeat. We see ourselves as a cog in the wheel in trying to break that cycle.
“When families understand the difference between tough love and enablement, when they figure out how to help this person, what kind of help they need, then things will get better. So many families deal not only with the problems of the addict but feelings of anger, resentment, hopelessness, helplessness, shame, sorrow and more.”

Hipsky said this is just the beginning of the ARRC. Dr. Darryl Arrington, the family counselor at Helping Out Mission in Baltimore and member of CCF, is the facilitator at the ARRC weekly meetings. This gives them a licensed therapist for anything beyond the scope of both support and resource.
While there are volunteers available to pray with attendees who wish it, the meetings are nondenominational and open to anyone dealing with addiction. ARRC exists to equip, support and educate families, friends and spouses with information, boundaries and resources available to help them as they navigate addiction and recovery with their loved ones.
Each week a specific topic is addressed along with information about available resources and discussion of individual questions. ARRC meets every Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 3168 Braverton St., fourth floor, in Edgewater (the big brick office building off Mitchells Chance Road).
Hipsky said they are still learning the ropes as far as what’s going to resonate with the community.
“There’s a lot of stigma attached to the problem,” Hipsky said. “No one walks around with a sign saying, ‘My kid’s an addict’ or ‘My husband’s an addict.’ We’re just trying to get the information out there where it can do the most good.”

Crop Deer Damage Issue

Farm Bureau Hotline!!
On the floor of the Senate this week, legislation put forward by the Sportsman's Coalition to prohibit the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) from issuing deer control night shooting permits to farmers was debated. The bill would have cut off a tool to address overwhelming deer crop damage that cannot be controlled under normal depredation permits. Maryland Farm Bureau opposed SB 747 as it was amended in Committee. Senators Hough, Mathias, Middleton, Jennings and Eckardt worked to delay the bill so amendments can be drafted over the weekend to address Farm Bureau's concerns. We are working to reach a compromise that allows farmers to protect their crops.

Spring Flower Show At Homestead

The delicate, short-lived crocuses flowers have pushed their heads out of the ground, if only for a brief time. That means only one thing: Spring is almost here.
Actually, two things. The “2018 Spring Flower Show: Gardens that Work” opens this week at Homestead Gardens’ Davidsonville location at 743 West Central Avenue. Homestead’s Annual Flower Show vividly illustrates how beautiful, bountiful and sustainable gardens can work in harmony to generate benefits leading to a healthy lifestyle and environment. Homestead’s team of experts has created a series of colorful interconnected gardens from thousands of flowering plants. These gardens will inspire and educate about the important intersections between gardens which enhance our environment, health and well-being.
You’ll find plenty of inspiration and learn how your gardening efforts can work for the benefit of the bay, the bees and your body as displays of a bayscape garden, a rain garden, an edible garden, a pollinator garden and more.
The preview party is Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and the show officially opens on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Matthew Niemeyer Passes Away

MATT NIEMEYER March 3, 1967 - March 2, 2018
Matthew Niemeyer, dedicated financial services lobbyist and former Bush administration official, died March 2, 2018 at his Davidsonville, MD home after a courageous battle with cancer. His beloved wife Amy and loving children Anna and Peter were with him.
Matt began his career in government and politics with an internship in the office of Senator John McCain, and then at the National Republican Congressional Committee and as a Congressional staffer. Time spent with relatives on an Israeli kibbutz as a young man influenced his decision to work as Political Director at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Matt then moved on to as serve as Assistant U.S. Trade Representative under President George W. Bush (2003-2006). As Assistant USTR, Matt led efforts for the passage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) and directed legislative strategy for the successful passage of free trade agreements with Australia, Bahrain, Chile, Morocco, and Singapore. In 2008, Matt went to work at The World Bank and served as principal liaison to the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Government of Canada. In 2010, Matt rejoined the private sector as Vice President, Office of Government Affairs at Goldman Sachs, where he specialized in issues related to financial regulatory reform, tax, and international trade. Born within shouting distance of Boston's Fenway Park, Matt was a lifelong Red Sox fan. His mom, Hinda Rose Niemeyer, and dad, Edwin Brooks Niemeyer (deceased), often took infant Matt to the ballpark when the gates opened for the 7th inning stretch. A native of Marblehead, MA, it was there amidst the winding ways and historical homes, that Matt developed an enduring interest and love for history and American government. Matt attended high school in Tucson, AZ, where he was active in student government, and graduated from Arizona State University. Matt developed a love of travel as a young man and often traveled to Europe, Asia and the Middle East with work and family. Despite his successful career, Matt's greatest joy was in family life, as a loving husband to Amy, whom he married in 2003, and devoted father of Anna and Peter. In the last year of his life, Matt was able to take Anna to London and Spain and the family to Portugal and Mexico. Matt loved nothing more than spending time at home and he was endlessly entertained and enchanted by his children.
