Capital-Gazette Sold To Alden Global

If you have been disappointed in the local news coverage, which has seriously declined in recent years,  it is probably going to get worse with the purchase of the Capital-Gazette and other papers by Alden Global Capital.

New York-based hedge fund Alden Global Capital – known for slashing its newspapers' budgets to extract escalated profits – won shareholder approval Friday for its $633 million bid to acquire the Tribune Publishing newspaper chain.

The purchase represents the culmination of Alden's years-long drive to take over the company and its storied titles – including the Chicago TribuneThe Baltimore Sun, Capital-GazetteNew York Daily News and major metro papers from Hartford, Conn., to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Alden's reputation as a "vulture" fund had set off a frantic effort by union members in Tribune Publishing newsrooms. Their organizer, Baltimore Sun education reporter Liz Bowie, dubbed the effort "Project Mayhem." The journalists tried to secure potential buyers in numerous Tribune markets who embraced the public-minded aspirations of journalism, including the Maryland philanthropist and hotel magnate Stewart Bainum Jr.

Letter From Ken and Nancy Thompson

We just wanted to say goodbye to D’ville - our home for 35 years.  My wife and I needed to find a single level home because of medical reasons, and we found what we needed on Kent Island.  But, let us tell you about our life in D’ville, which was a true blessing.

We bought the land and had our home built in 1985, raised two sons, helped raise two Goddaughters, helped raise two granddaughters, Bichons and cats.  Fed the deer, birds and wild turkeys in our backyard, and way back in the day Dr. Graw’s peacocks would sneak over to raid our bird feeders.

We were honored to be working with our neighbors as part of Friends of Rural Preservation, Cub Scouts, Davidsonville PTO (back then), coaching Gator soccer, DACA, AA County Veterans Affairs Commission, loved the Hershey’s ice cream at the  Davidsonville County Store.  We didn’t have to drive away from Davidsonville to witness Spring blooms and Autumn colors all throughout the area.

We learned the history of the Davidsonville corner and surrounding farms through chats and presentations with long-time residents.  We took advantage of our rural beauty and walked to a stream on the back of our property to sit on fallen tree trunks and watch the water flow by large ferns planted by nature.  When severe storms were predicted, we learned to fill a bathtub with water so we could at least flush toilets should the power go out.

All in all, Davidsonville is a great place to live, We believe that Rt50/Rt424 is the last rural intersection between Washington DC and Annapolis.  We will always remember returning from work in DC finally reaching Davidsonville Road and home.  The perfect comfort zone.
