D'ville Residents Oppose Dog Park
From the DACA Villager:
A pre-submittal
community informational meeting was held on
March 4, announced by letter from Messick
George,
Inc., 410-266-3212, to near neighbors of the property on
10.776 acres at 1691 Rossback Road, owned
by Bonnie
McLeod. Many concerned Davidsonville residents
attended the meeting. They learned that Whoofpark LLC has a
business license and seeks to make a profit as a private
membership club, with fenced dog runs, an enclosed
facility with bathrooms, a swimming pool, a covered open
pavilion, and approximately 65 parking spaces. The
website www.whoofpark.com indicated that the owner proposes
various indoor and outdoor dog exercise
areas, pet adoption programs, and social gatherings allowing
human attendees to enjoy music, craft beer, wine, and
food.
Residents of
Rossback Road and adjacent communities oppose this
use of the land and asked DACA’s support in this
opposition, based on a number of issues. Rossback Road is a
designated historic scenic road; current zoning prohibits
private commercial parks on such roads. It is a narrow road
with no shoulders, bordered by water-filled ditches
(especially in this season), and traveled by large dump trucks
en route to Brandywine landfill, automobile traffic en
route to Davidsonville Park, and bicyclists. In addition,
the farm owner directly next door is concerned for the safety
of their livestock if dogs get out of the park. Dawn Porter
presented the concerns of Rossback Road neighbors at
DACA’s March 7 board meeting. The DACA board
listened carefully and voted unanimously to oppose the dog
park. DACA will send a letter expressing this
opposition
to the Administrative Hearing Officer.

Anna Black Passes Away
Anna Casey Black, 96, long-time resident of Harwood, MD and beloved wife of Ray Black for 63 years, died on March 14, 2019.
Anna was born in Mt. Rainier, MD on July 31, 1922 to Patrick and Nora (Diskin) Casey. In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her husband Ray, brothers John, Martin, and Francis and her beloved sister Catherine (Sis).
Her life was framed by her mother's County Galway and father's County Mayo roots, to where she and Ray traveled many times with friends and family. She nurtured connections to cousins in Westport, and especially the ancestral homestead in Tuar Mhic Eadaigh. She and Ray shared a love for everything Irish (her email moniker was "tizhurself"), including its music and culture. The grandchildren, some now themselves parents, will break into all four verses of "Waltzing with Bears," with minimal provocation.
Anna is survived by her five children, Susan (Michael Duff), Kathleen (Todd) Redlin, Julie (William) Carlson, Daniel (Marie White) and David (Lisa); grandchildren, Trevor (Emi), Andrew (Kourtney), Brian (Liv), Lindsey (Jeremiah), Bridget (Rob), Allison (Jeff), Rena (Adam), Emmet, Patricia, Kerry (John), Margaret Mary, Katie, Casey, and Rory; and great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Adelaide, Benjamin, Westley, Raegan, Theo, a niece and nephews, as well as cousins on two continents, including the redoubtable and steadfast Bridie Talty. Left to grieve are many friends from her days at the Census Bureau, Elmhurst Street and District Heights, and Holy Family Parish in Davidsonville, MD. Anna thrived in her Irish Catholic enclave in metro D.C., and although a child of the depression, her father was employed by the railroad, leaving her with mostly happy childhood memories. She loved her time in high school at St. Patrick's Academy, attending the annual reunions for the class of 1940 well into her nineties. She had many friends at St. Pat's and excelled in sport as a member of the varsity basketball team, an avocation that continued when she played on a team at Census. Later in life her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were delighted to discover she was also a maven at bowling duckpins. Anna met Ray while working for Census where she was a data processor in an emerging automated punch card age. They married at St. James Parish in Mt. Rainier on August 20, 1949, with a reception held in the backyard of her home. Their growing family resided in District Heights, MD where Anna was active in Mt. Calvary parish, and devoted herself to her community and family, which included caring for her mother. Anna and Ray loved socializing as square dancers, camping with family and annual progressive dinners with friends. In 1968 she and Ray realized a dream by purchasing property in the countryside of Anne Arundel County, that they, and five other Mt. Calvary families, acquired in a handshake deal with Annapolis patriarch, Ike Shepard. The compound became known as All Seasons Farm. Anna returned to government service, this time to work for Prince George's County, where she was proud to serve in the office of the County Executive. After she and Ray built their home in Harwood, she selflessly gave end-of-life care to her mother-in-law, and sister, while launching her children, and some of their children. The home they called Connemara became the center of family activity, hosting multiple wedding receptions and parties in the backyard, in the tradition of her own wedding party. Anna was an inveterate fan of Washington's professional football team, including a fanatical devotion to its AM radio broadcast. Though her fandom was long-standing (an early memory was listening to a game with her father on Dec. 7, 1941, when admirals and officers were paged by the public address announcer to report for duty), it was a class for women in the early 1970s that cemented that allegiance by teaching her rules and plays. Her conversion of Ray to this Sunday afternoon obsession was hard fought but, as always, she won him over. Her family will miss the support and love she gave. Without her, they will continue the tradition of holiday gatherings, with too much food, and noise, but no longer will babies be soothed by her wordless "lullaby". She taught her offspring generosity, well and by example, a lesson they carry forward. The family is grateful to Hospice of the Chesapeake as well as to Anna's caregivers at Riva Terrace VI, most especially Marissa, for her kindness and friendship.
Friends and Family are invited to Anna's Celebration of Life on Monday, March 18 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday at 10 am at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davidsonville, MD., with reception to follow at church hall. Interment is at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Development Office, 345 Belden Hill Road, Wilton, CT 06897-3898 and St. Patrick's Academy Alumnae Association fund for the Sisters of the Holy Cross, ? Hunter Hardesty Arrested
From the Capital-Gazette:
OCEAN CITY, Md. — A
Maryland man seen tackling a federally protected pelican on video has been
arrested on animal cruelty charges out of Florida.
Maryland State Police said in a Friday
release that 31-year-old William Hunter Hardesty was arrested at a hotel in
Ocean City, Maryland. News outlets report the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission investigated the video of Hardesty trying to capture a
brown pelican at Florida's Key West Historic Seaport. The video was taken March
5 and posted on his Facebook page March 8.
Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward
told The Miami Herald the charges amount to five misdemeanors. Hardesty is
being held as a fugitive in the Worcester County Detention Center, awaiting
extradition to Florida.
Maryland State Police at the Berlin Barrack were tipped off
Friday morning by “concerned citizens” who told police they believed the
individual in the video was staying at an Ocean City hotel and had been
bragging to them about being wanted for feeding and tackling a pelican in the
Florida Keys, according to police.
After the video went viral, Hardesty had continued to post about
the pelican incident on social media, including a link to a GoFundMe campaign
to raise $20,000 for himself. The campaign pledges to donate half of the funds
to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center, but does not specify what
the remaining $10,000 would be used for.
On March 10, he posted “I’m so hungry I could eat a pelican!!”
on Facebook. And on Wednesday he wrote “Thinking about gettin a pillican [sic]
tattoo today,” followed by two smiling face emojis with horns.
Maryland troopers arrested Hardesty without incident soon after
9 a.m. Friday morning at a hotel in the 12000-block of Ocean Gateway, in Ocean
City. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Florida has been notified of the
arrest and is initiating extradition proceedings, according to police.

Pat Spencer Drafted By Bayhawks
The Chesapeake Bayhawks landed one of the most prolific attackmen in recent college lacrosse history in the first round, taking Loyola-Maryland star Patrick Spencer with the seventh overall selection.
Spencer has amassed 306 career points and is on the verge of becoming Loyola’s all-time leading scorer. The Davidsonville resident is just six points shy of surpassing Gary Hanley (311, 1978-1981).
Spencer is enjoying a huge senior season and has already totaled 40 points on 18 goals and 22 assists. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Boys’ Latin graduate just moved past Duke’s Jordan Wolf (2011-2014) and Siena’s Tony Asterino (1978-1981) into sole possession of 13 th place on the NCAA Division I career points list.
“Patrick Spencer has been the best player in college lacrosse this season and has put together an incredible career,” Chesapeake General Manager and Head Coach Dave Cottle said. “Patrick possesses tremendous vision, impressive passing ability and simply makes all the players around him better.”For the complete article, go to:

Hunter Hardesty Faces Possible Charges
From the Capital-Gazette:
A Davidsonville man may be facing legal trouble after he
posted a video to social media Thursday that appears to show him attacking a
federally protected pelican in the Florida Keys.
Hunter Hardesty of Davidsonville posted the
widely criticized video Thursday to his Facebook account, which was geotagged to Key West, Fla. The video begins with Hardesty
appearing to lean over a harbor’s edge holding out something in his hand. The
pelican floats closer, and Hardesty appears to jump into the water on top of
the pelican, causing both to dunk beneath the water’s surface.
When the two re-emerge, Hardesty appears to
grasp the bird with two hands while others not pictured on camera can be heard
laughing.
A woman not pictured asks Hardesty to get
out of the water or else she would call authorities. The pelican seizes on
opportunity and snaps its beak across the man’s face, causing him to release
the bird.
Hardesty did not return a request
for comment Saturday. Many on social media lashed out at the stunt on Hardesty’s personal Facebook page, calling the move cruel and stating they had reported him to Florida law enforcement.
In the video’s comments, Hardesty wrote
“Next time ima eat him for dinner !! Wonder what they taste like.”

Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is working with the state’s attorneys
to determine what charges might be appropriate, said Officer Bobby Dube, a
spokesman for the commission’s Florida Keys division.
“We never want to harm wildlife, and that's
what he was doing,” Dube said. “He was enticing the pelican and then jumped on
it.”
Dube said the footage appeared to take place
at the Key West Seaport and features a brown pelican. That species is protected
under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Florida state law, which
prohibit people from feeding or molesting the bird, he said.
Authorities are considering whether animal
cruelty charges are appropriate, Dube said.
Note: William Hunter Hardesty has an extensive arrest record according to Judiciary Search.
