Governor's Bridge Replace/Repair Options

The century-old bridge on Governor’s Bridge Road on the Anne Arundel-Prince George’s line closed in 2015 due to safety concerns and hasn’t reopened.  While narrow and not in good repair,  it has been a nice shortcut to Bowie for some Davidsonville residents.
The bridge connects the two counties over the Patuxent River, and officials are now weighing their options — will they keep things as they are now, repair the existing bridge, install a new bridge or build a second bridge?
The public has until Dec. 3 to weigh in.
Officials from Prince George’s and Anne Arundel County met last week to present information on the bridge project to the public, according to Prince George’s councilman Todd Turner. Six options were presented.

Maria Shields Sets National Record

At the North Coast 12-hour run, held on the shores of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, Maria “Nica” Shields of Davidsonville again proved that age has nothing to do with achievements. At 67, Nica set the national record in her age group for the furthest distance run in 12 hours, running 63 laps of the course and totaling 55.557 miles.
Nica reports that with her crew Dani Seiss she knew, after struggling though stomach issues and cold weather, that she had the record after 60 laps, but wanted more so she went back out with 1 hour and 20 minutes left and was able to put down more miles to place her stamp on the race.
Nica also holds the record for the 60-64 year old age group, certified by the USATF. And Nica isn’t done yet; she missed the world record by only seven miles, and vows to get it! Congratulations to Nica for setting the record in a new age group.

Visual Concepts Photography

Breast cancer doesn’t just take away parts of your body. It can also take the people and things you love the most. And it can take away your control.
While Cheryl Listman was undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer, it wasn’t safe for her to be around her children. When Maggie Kudirka was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer at 23 years old, she had to give up her career as a Joffrey ballet dancer in New York City.
By taking their portraits, Linda McCarthy gave these women back their control. Their stories — and photos — are especially notable this month. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
McCarthy runs Visual Concepts Photography, a Davidsonville studio where she takes senior photos, family portraits, glamour shots and headshots. In the last year, she has taken photos of 20 women who survived or are being treated for breast cancer — for free.

Bob Bartlett's Theatrical Production

This year’s theater season in Annapolis includes Shakespeare, at least two productions of “A Christmas Carol” and a variety of performances from local companies.
But there is probably just one play being staged in a laundry on Maryland Avenue.
When Bob Barlett was living in Annapolis five years ago, he would spend his Sunday nights at The Avenue Laundromat, 74 Maryland Ave., doing, well, laundry. But he didn’t just watch the dryer-full of clothes roll to pass the time. “I wrote a play — a time-bending romantic comedy — set in that laundromat,” said Barlett, a Davidsonville resident who works as a professor at Bowie State University.
The plot: Bear can’t shake his propensity for accidents until Chance, an unemployed paramedic living in her 1978 Volkswagen Beetle, wanders into his lonely world. Only about a dozen audience members will be seated per performance of The Accident Bear” from Nov. 30 to Dec. 22.
Tickets go on sale Monday for $25 and are available at www.bob-bartlett.com
