Two Die In Davidsonville Crash

Officials say that two people are dead after a crash on Route 50 in Anne Arundel County, on Saturday night.
According to Anne Arundel County Fire officials, just before 9:30 p.m., units responded to a crash on Route 50 and Davidsonville.

The deceased victims are identified as Dustin Smith, 22, and Ryan Weibley, 24, both of Edgewater.  Smith was the driver and Weibley was the passenger in a white Honda Civic.  Both men were pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS personnel
At approximately 9:00 p.m. last night, a trooper from the Annapolis Barrack responded to a crash in the area of westbound Route 50 and Maryland Route 424. Upon his arrival, a white Honda Civic was found in the woods, off of the Route 424 exit ramp in Davidsonville.
About ten minutes prior to the crash, the same vehicle passed a state trooper in an unmarked patrol car on westbound Route 50 at a high rate of speed.  The trooper activated his emergency equipment and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, which is believed to have been exceeding 100 mph. The trooper lost site of the vehicle and continued traveling toward the Anne Arundel/Prince George’s County line.

Moments later, the Glen Burnie Barrack received a report of a crash off of the exit ramp for Maryland Route 424. The vehicle, identified as a Honda Civic, is believed to be the same vehicle that failed to stop.

The Maryland State Police CRASH Team responded to investigate the cause of the crash. Anne Arundel County Fire and EMS also responded to the scene.  Maryland Department of Transportation SHA personnel provided assistance with traffic and detours.

Jon Mazza Gets Full Release From Towson U.

From the Baltimore Sun:

Attackman Jon Mazza has been given his release to transfer from the Towson men’s lacrosse program, coach Shawn Nadelen said Tuesday evening.
“He was granted his full release,” Nadelen said in a text.
Mazza, who was expected to spend his senior year with the Tigers, scored 16 goals and assisted on eight others for a career-high 24 points in just eight starts last season. But the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Davidsonville resident was suspended for the final seven games for an unspecified violation of team rules.
Despite the lengthy absence, Mazza still finished third on the team in assists and fourth in both goals and points. Efforts to reach Mazza for comment were unsuccessful.

Mazza had 15 goals and seven assists as a freshman in 2016 and 16 goals and four assists as a sophomore in 2017. Switching from midfielder to attackman at the beginning of last season, he had a hand in seven of the team’s eight goals in a two-goal win against UMBC on March 3 and scored twice — including the game-winner — in a 7-6 overtime win against Ohio State seven days later.
Mazza’s departure saps the offense of two projected starters in Mazza and midfielder Jean-Luc Chetner, who led Towson in assists (15) and points (32) in 2018 in his final year of eligibility.

Mary Markuski Passes Away

Mary Margaret Markuski of Davidsonville, Maryland formerly of Bowie, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, August 08, 2018.
Mary is the wife of the late Victor P. Markuski, USMC (Ret.); mother of Kathy Nordeen, Paul David Markuski and his wife Deborah, V. Peter Markuski, Jr. and his wife Linda, and Michael Andrew Markuski and his wife Barbara; sister of Kate Catloth; grandmother of Tiffany Gardner and her husband Kenneth, Victor Markuski III and his wife Nicole, Christina Fabac and her husband Joel and Steven Markuski. Mary was preceded in death by one sister, Emma, and one brother, Buddy.
A memorial gathering was held on Sunday, August 12, 2018, and interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, so she can rest in peace with Vic.
Mary was a leader in the Bowie community throughout the decades and passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Mary and Vic bought their Country Club dream home in Bowie in 1965 and watched it being built. Mary was instrumental in organizing, what was then, the Belair Boys Club Women's Auxiliary in the 1970's and ran for City Council of Bowie in 1975. She volunteered for Hubert Humphrey and Steny Hoyer. She was very active at the DAV and the Senior Center, organizing many activities and serving on the board. She proudly became the Queen of a newly-created local chapter of the Red Hat Society. She was always quick with a slew of jokes and an occasional song, and always won at Trivial Pursuit. She was an avid Redskin and Terrapin fan and very opinionated about sports, politics and current events. In the end her body failed her, but her mind never did.

Rachel Byrd Arrested

A Davidsonville woman who had just been released from jail after being arrested on theft charges is now facing additional offenses. Police said she tried to steal jewelry from a bag that was wrongly given to her by court security.
Rachel Ann Byrd, 29, was originally at the Annapolis District Courthouse Sunday for an initial appearance in front of a court commissioner. She was facing charges that she stole golf equipment from a pickup truck in Edgewater in February and sold it to a pawn shop. A warrant was issued for her arrest in July and she turned herself in to Annapolis police Sunday.
After a District Court commissioner ordered her released on her own recognizance, she became belligerent with members of Watkins Security, police wrote in charging documents. The security firm provides guards and helps with processing on a contractual basis at the Annapolis courthouse.
Police arrived at the courthouse shortly after 11 p.m. and responders remained on scene until Byrd was released with her belongings, charging documents state.
However, members of the security team realized they had given Byrd the wrong bag, instead handing her property belonging to “Ms. Byrns,” charging documents state.

An April Lee Byrns, 36, of Halethorpe, was also released from jail on Sunday on her own recognizance after being charged with second-degree assault, online court records show.
After Byrd returned the bag and the responding Annapolis police officer gave her the correct property, Watkins Security called the department again around 11:30 p.m., saying a silver neckless and ring were reported missing from Byrns’ bag.
Officers located Byrd driving a white Chevrolet Silverado and stopped her on Rowe Boulevard near the exit to Route 50 East, charging documents state.
Police said the items were found after a search of the vehicle and she was arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft.
She was released on her own recognizance Monday, court records show.
No attorney is listed as representing her in online court records.

DAA U14 Select Softball Team

The Davidsonville Athletic Association is excited to announce  the formation of a girls 14 & under select softball team for the fall of 2018!  In this inaugural season we are  looking to field only a single select team, however, with  this launch we hope to gauge the interest in our DAA community to have a full-scale county program at multiple  age groups as early as spring 2019. How quickly, or if,  this expands will be based on the interest and feedback we get from the community.  Our plan is to offer multiple  clinic opportunities this fall for interested players to  get an introduction to the game to see if this is a sport they would like to try in the future.  Stay tuned for more  information about those opportunities!
Tryouts for this select team are tentatively scheduled for August 6th and 8th. The Davidsonville Gators 14U Girls Select Softball team will play in the Central Maryland League for  scrimmage-type play and participate in 10 USSSA tournament events over the fall, spring and summer.
