From the Capital Gazette:
Dr. William P. Jones and his wife, Patricia,
at the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians Installation and Awards Luncheon
at the University of Maryland, College Park
In the 21st century, an age of marvelous medical technologies and
specialties, the dedicated family physician can sometimes seem to be an
overlooked figure. But in one instance at least, that’s not the case.
Recently,
the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians recognized longtime Shady Side
practitioner Dr. William P. Jones for professional
and civic achievements and contributions of the highest level and presented him
with the MDAFP Lifetime Achievement Award. Jones was the ninth recipient of
this award.
The award
was given to Jones at the MDAFP Installation and Awards Luncheon by MDAFP
President Dr. Patricia Czapp, during the Maryland Family
Medicine Summit at the University of Maryland, College Park.
“They
called me up and said that I would get a Lifetime Achievement award and I said
what does that mean?” Jones said. “They said I’d put in a lot of time and
effort in all the offices in the organization and they thought I should get it.
And I said OK.”
Jones has
been a member of the MDAFP since 1981 and has held, as he puts it, “just about
every office in the place, including president.”
After
medical school, Jones interned in San Diego at the Naval Hospital, the largest
naval hospital in the world with 37,050 beds. He then did a tour on the USS
Niagara Falls, a supply ship for the hospital ships Sanctuary and Repose running
from Japan to Danang, as a physician during the Vietnam War.
After leaving the Navy,
Jones worked at the Suburban Hospital in Bethesda until 1981, and then opened a
practice in Annapolis. The family moved to Davidsonville in 1979. Later, he
purchased the practice from Dr. Emily Wilson in
Davidsonville. In 1991, he purchased half of his current practice in Shady
Side. Jones has also been deputy medical examiner for Anne Arundel County since
1983.
