The Davidsonville Athletic Association has
been hit hard by the drop in youth football participation across Anne Arundel
County. In 2013, the organization fielded seven tackle football teams in AAYFA
competition. This year, it has just one, in the 11-year-old classification.
Ruben
Pavon, football commissioner for the DAA Gators last year, took notice.
“I had to
do something as a commissioner. What can I do to bring kids in?” Pavon said.
Through an internet search,
he found a program that intrigued him called Junior Development League (JDL)
Football. JDL’s unique format soon convinced Pavon to implement it in
Davidsonville. The program is the first of its kind in Maryland, and now, several
weeks into the season, 40 children ages 8 to 11 from across the county are
