Cat Missing From Tropic Bay

From the Davidsonville-Edgewater Patch:
DAVIDSONVILLE, MD — When owner Steve Koza unlocked the door of Tropic Bay Water Gardens at 600 West Central Ave. in Davidsonville June 17, he was greeted by the friendly brown tiger tabby Miles who lives at the store. Miles darted outside, but sadly hasn't been seen since.
After calling his name and searching high and low for the feline at the end of business on Monday, Koza realized Miles was missing and now is frantically trying to find his pet.
"Miles is four, almost five. I've had him since he was one. He spent his first year on the streets of Baltimore right where the riots were. He's not afraid of other animals and will stand up to them. He is very street smart ... he is extremely friendly, sometimes too friendly," Koza told Patch in an email.
Koza is worried that Miles hopped into someone's car or the back of a customer's truck, or might have been stolen. He plans to scroll through security footage to see if they can figure out what happened to Miles.
"He's such an incredibly wonderful cat. All my customers love him," Koza told Patch. "He is an incredible animal. I love him so much!"
Miles should still be wearing a silver and black breakaway collar with a bell, his rabies tag and a black FOB on it. The rabies tag number is Lot #17417-10419 Tag #705. He also has a very small nick at the top of his one ears.
Anyone who has information about Miles can contact Koza at 410-340-2700 or tropicbay@att.net.

Spencer Commits To Northwestern

From the Capital-Journal:
Former Loyola-Maryland lacrosse star Pat Spencer has committed to play basketball at Northwestern of the Big Ten Conference.
Bruce Spencer told The Capital of his son’s decision on Thursday afternoon. Bruce and Pat Spencer traveled to Chicago together to visit the school and meet with head coach Chris Collins.
Pat Spencer, who won the Tewaaraton Award as college lacrosse’s best player last month, is expected to sign his national letter-of-intent later today. Northwestern cannot announce Spencer’s decision and Collins cannot comment until the letter-of-intent has been processed.
Because he completed four years of eligibility in lacrosse and graduated, Spencer can play another year in a different sport as a graduate transfer, according to NCAA rules.

Northwestern plays Maryland twice next season, meaning Spencer will get a chance to go against the program he grew up rooting for.
Spencer was a two-year member of the varsity basketball team at Boys’ Latin School in Baltimore. The Davidsonville resident helped the Lakers capture their first MIAA B Conference championship in 25 years and earned All-State recognition.
Spencer was named second team All-Metro by The Sun after averaging 14.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder played point guard for Boys’ Latin and totaled 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the B Conference championship game victory over Annapolis Area Christian School.

Maria Shields Sets World Record

From the Capital-Gazette:
Three years ago, Maria "Nica" Shields of Davidsonville set her sights on setting a world record. Nica, who is 68, wanted to break a record set back in 1989 by Francoise Lamothe – namely the 12-hour world record of 100.177 kilometers (62.260 miles).
Shields got her chance at the Dawn to Dusk to Dawn Ultra (D3). The D3, held in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania at the Academy Park High School 400-meter track, is ideal for setting records.
On May 11, 2019, Shields ran 100.224 kilometers or 62.276 miles, which was her best 12-hour distance in several years and thereby achieved her goal.
Congratulations to Maria on another great accomplishment and inspiring others to get out there and reach their goals!

Man Shot On 50 Is Fireman

From the Capital-Gazette:
Police said a man wielding a knife who was shot by an officer on Route 50 Friday night was hit by a car while walking in traffic.
Anne Arundel County police said witnesses told them the man was walking and standing in the eastbound travel lanes of Route 50 before Davidsonville Road in Davidsonville, possibly attempting to be struck.
Witnesses also said the suspect was hit by a car whose driver stayed on the scene before Anne Arundel County Fire personnel arrived at 9:44 p.m., police said.
Police said emergency responders were approached by the man they found on the right shoulder of the road, who then pulled out a knife and lunged toward them. Fire personnel called for police, and county and state police officers responded.
When he didn’t comply with the officers’ orders to drop the knife and get on the ground, Cpl. R. Heller Sr., a 20-year veteran of the department assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, fired one round that hit the man, police said.
As of 6:30 a.m. Monday, police said the man is being guarded while he is in critical condition at an area hospital.
Police say they plan to charge him with seven counts of assault, reckless endangerment, and related charges.
The man is a Prince George’s County volunteer firefighter, Prince George’s fire officials said Sunday. Spokesman Mike Yourishin did not release the name of the firefighter and said the department is cooperating with Anne Arundel police.

Shooting Closes Rt. 50 Near D'ville

From the Capital-Gaztte:
The Anne Arundel County Police Department says there was a police-involved shooting on eastbound U.S. Route 50 on Friday around 10 p.m. The shooting took place right before Maryland Route 424, also known as Davidsonville Road, in Davidsonville.
The county fire department had responded to a call at 9:44 p.m. of a pedestrian possibly struck by a vehicle. When emergency medical responders arrived, they did not find any vehicles that appeared to be involved in an accident, but they were immediately approached by a man they found on the right shoulder of the road. He pulled out a knife and lunged toward the emergency responders, Sgt. Jackie Davis, a police spokeswoman, said shortly after midnight. Fire personnel called for police, and county and state police officers quickly responded. The suspect failed to comply with the officers’ orders to drop the knife and get on the ground, the department reported on Facebook around 1 a.m. Saturday. One of the officers, a 20-year veteran of the department assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, fired one round and shot the man, the post said. He was taken to an area hospital and his condition was unknown, Davis said. It was unclear whether he was also struck by a vehicle and injured. Davis did not identify the man and could not provide any description of him. No police or emergency medical responders were injured, she said. Davis said officers continue to investigate. Detectives were still on scene after 1 a.m. Saturday, the post said. Anyone with any information is asked to call the homicide unit at 410-222-4731 or the tip line at 410-222-4700. Officials closed all three eastbound traffic lanes and the shoulders, as well as one of three westbound traffic lanes and one shoulder. Davis said the lanes were likely to remain closed overnight.
