Serious Injury Accident

From The South River Source:
Anne Arundel County Police Department spokesman Justin Mulcahy said that a Gambrills man, was critically injured in an automobile accident on Monday on Defense Highway at Rutland Road in Davidsonville. The incident happened around noon. Police said that the driver, Bernhard Leslie Ferg, 65, was entrapped and was taken to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore priority one via ambulance.
The incident happened right around the time a downpour arrived in the area from the storm system that moved through.
Police said that Ferg was driving in a 2005 Dodge Caravan taxi, traveling northbound on Defense Highway, when he lost control in a curve in the road, crossing the double yellow line. He came into the path of a southbound 2011 Ford E450 box truck driven by Javier Orando Lopez, 39, of Silver Spring.
Ferg’s van side-swiped the truck then traveled under the side of the truck and hit the rear axle. The crash caused heavy front end damage to the van and entrapped the driver.
Lopez was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries.
Police said that investigators from the Traffic Safety Section responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. At this point in the investigation, it is unknown if alcohol or a prior medical condition were contributing factors in this case. Preliminarily, it appears that driver error and weather conditions contributed significantly to the severity of this crash. The investigation is continuing.
