Sarah Melanson’s day at the ChesapeakeMan Ultra Distance Championship included more than just a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. Try jellyfish, mosquitoes and a steady wind with a torrential rain storm as the closing act.
The challenging conditions to the already grueling 140.6-mile course made Melanson’s finish in 15 hours, 30 minutes and 39 seconds all the more impressive. And, at 17 years, 10 months and 20 days old as of the Sept. 21 event, Melanson, a freshman at West Virginia University, became the youngest known female to complete the Ironman distance in less than 17 hours as required. In fact, Ironman events, as well as many like it around the world, do not allow competitors under the age of 18. At the Chesapeake Ultra Distance Championship, Melanson was the youngest female entrant by seven years and the youngest female finisher by 13 years
