Stephen Cobis Passes Away

Stephen John Cobis, Jr. died on Friday, July 21, 2023 at his home in Annapolis, Md. Born on June 30, 1928 in Queens, N.Y., John was raised with five siblings by his mother in Woodstock, Md.

Friends are invited to celebrate John’s life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Friday, Aug. 4 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, Md. on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, Md.

Karen Ramirez-Herrera Passes Away

      Karen Lynne Ramirez-Herrera of Davidsonville, Maryland, born in Cheverly, Maryland,  passed away at the age of 58, on July 24, 2023. 

   She is survived by : her significant other Crispino Efrain Ramirez-Herrera; her children, Vanessa Renee Ramirez-Herrer   (René Peñalonzo), Alexis Efrain Ramirez-Herrera (Xiomara Zelaya), Maritza Carolina Ramirez-Herrera (Jason Case), Crislynne Macaela Ramirez-Herrera and Mackenzie Valentine Ramirez-Herrera; her grandchildren, Christopher Alexis, Nicolas Maison, Jewelianna Labelle, Lillian Isabelle, Miley Alina, Christine Lynne, Matteo Alejandro, Evelyn Renee and Elanor Janet; and her pets, Bam-Bam, Bella, Shyla, Lumi and Rascal.

     A funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 30th 2023 at 12:00 PM at the Lakemont Memorial Gardens (900 W Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD 21035).

New Fire Station Near Edgewater

 The Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department is embarking on an exciting endeavor that will greatly benefit the surrounding communities including Davidsonville. An alternative site has been chosen for the new fire station that will now be situated in the 100 block of Stepneys Lane, strategically positioned between Central Elementary School and Central Special School. This larger site presents an incredible opportunity for the construction of a cutting-edge 25,000 square-foot facility.

Mayo Student Dies At Home

A community in Edgewater is mourning the loss of a 10 year old student at Mayo Elementary School.  

In a letter to families, Principal Lenora Fox said Anthony Leveron-Mancia, who just completed fourth grade at the school, died Friday morning after a tragic accident at his home.  "Anthony was a sweet young man who loved every one of the many friends he had at our school. He was very 
much looking forward to entering the fifth grade in the fall," the letter states.  "Anthony loved to draw cartoons, play jokes, build with Legos, and play video games with his friends. His favorite 
game to play online with his friends was Roblox."

Funeral arrangements have been made for Saturday, July 15, 9:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, located at 515 Loch Haven Road in Edgewater. Friends of Anthony’s family have established a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.

Janice Zanardi Passs Away

    Janice M. Zanardi of Davidsonville, MD passed away on July 6, 2023.    She was born on June 2, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA.
    She was the beloved wife of Louis Zanardi of Davidsonville, MD – Married 55 Years – since November 11th, 1967. They made their home in Davidsonville, MD since 1977. Loving mother of Christopher Zanardi of Ashburn, VA, David Zanardi of San Antonio, TX, Richard Zanardi of Washington, DC and wife Allie Zanardi. Loving grandmother of Julia, Laura, Luke, Mia, Mattis, Madison, Alaina, and Isabella. Sister of Rich Knowski and his wife Karen of New Hope, PA. Aunt of Richard and Michael Knowski, sister-in-law of Ted Zanardi of Wood-Ridge, NJ. Preceding Mrs. Zanardi in death are her son, Brian Zanardi, and her parents George "Duke" Knowski and Genevieve Knowski.
    Mrs. Zanardi graduated with honors from Little Flower High School in Philadelphia, PA. She had an amazing 20+ year career with the US House of Representatives, including as a staff member serving Ohio's 15th Congressional District under the Honorable Chalmers Wylie and the Honorable Deborah Price; and as a staff member serving Ohio's 6th Congressional District under the Honorable Frank Cremeans. A devoted Mother and Grandmother, Mrs. Zanardi's stated career ambition was being a great mom. "Mama Z" touched so many in her life and the commitment and love she showed to her family was felt each and every day. She was the pillar of the Zanardi family and her life and actions were the definition of unconditional love. Please keep her memory in your hearts and prayers.

Judith Ann Stokees Passes Away


Judith Ann Stokes (Gertie), 71 peacefully passed away on June 28, 2023, in the comfort of her Edgewater home surrounded by family.

 Judy was preceded in death by her father Grover Caywood Vermillion. She was a loving wife to Robert Stokes for 34 years. She was a wonderful loving mother to four boys and one daughter, William (Ricky) Stommel (Kate), Charles Stokes, and Kimberly Lucas (Jerry). A wonderful loving Grandmother (Gram) to 8 grandchildren: Felicia Nicolle (Kevin), Kaitlyn Stokes, Delaney Stokes, and Paiton Stommel along with 2 great-granddaughters. Judy is survived by her mother, Margaret Vermillion, and two brothers, Grover Vermillion, Jr and Gregory Vermillion (Anna). Judy had many nieces and nephews who also adored her. Judy was a member of Chesapeake Christian Fellowship and sang in the praise band serving her Lord and Savior for almost 20 years. Judy also sang with Capital City Sound along her with husband Bobby and numerous friends who were more like family. Judy loved to garden, football games, watching QVC, and being surrounded by family and friends. Judy had the most beautiful, kindest soul. Her smile would light up a room and any person she met would just adore her. She will forever be missed and always loved. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Judy's life on Tuesday, July 11 at 7 pm at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship 377 West Central Ave. Davidsonville, MD 21035.

The Community Action Agency is pleased to announce that IRC (Irish Restaurant Company) has joined to support its 3rd Taste of Anne Arundel!  While their first restaurant, Galway Bay, was already a sponsoring restaurant of our fundraiser, Brian BoruKillarney House, and Pirate’s Cove have joined a group of 18 restaurants donating gift cards for the raffle – bringing the total of donating local restaurants to 21!

IRC opened its first restaurant in Anne Arundel County in 1998.  Since then, they have expanded to four restaurants located in Annapolis, Davidsonville, Galesville, and Severna Park, offering their customers the opportunity to taste their way around Anne Arundel County!

Haley Urgo Back For 5th Year at Penn State

 One of Penn State's starting defenders is coming back next spring.

Haley Urgo announced she will return to the Nittany Lions for her fifth season with the team on Wednesday.

The Davidsonville, Maryland, native started all 18 games last season, totaling 20 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.

Urgo's return strengthens an already experienced Penn State defense, which is expected to retain third-team All-American Ellie Hollin, Sammy Dupcak and goalkeeper Ashley Bowan.

Penn State will look to build off its strong 2023 season, where it finished 11-7 and qualified for its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018.
