Willard Toney Passes Away


     Willard Dean Toney, 83, a resident of Davidsonville, MD for 50 years and previously of North Carolina, died on February 19, 2021 at her home after battling dementia, congestive heart failure and COPD for three years. 
    Born on February 8, 1938 in North Carolina to the late Joseph Cleatus and Minnie Geanette Davis Walker, Dean was an Anne Arundel County school bus driver. Dean was a former member of the Davidsonville Dance Club and helped organize the Davidsonville Bluegrass Festival. She enjoyed dancing, hallmark/ romance movies, chocolate shakes, chicken n dumplings, Frank Sinatra and thrift store bargains.
    Dean was preceded in death by her husband of more than 60 years, Charles Andrew Toney and her son, Charles Barry Toney. She is survived by her son, Chuck Toney of Davidsonville, MD; her siblings, Wayne and JC Walker both of Casar, NC, Katherine Sansing of Shelby, NC and Edith Brackett of Polkville, NC and her grandchildren, Emily, Katlyn, Dakota and Melissa Toney.

She is also survived by four siblings.

Ford West Passes Away

    Ford B. West, age 73 of Davidsonville, Maryland died surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 14 after a 15-year medical adventure with metastatic, castrate resistant, prostate cancer. 
    Ford was born on December 11, 1947 in Murphy, North Carolina to Venson and Evelyn Ford West. He graduated from Andrews High School in 1966 and Mars Hill College in 1970. He was a member of the Mars Hill football team, tri-captain of the 1969 team, active in student government, and listed in the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. During the first Vietnam draft lottery in 1969, his draft number was 39. He joined the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge in May 1974 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He then attended North Carolina State University where he met the love of his life, Mary Lucas ("Cathy"). He earned a Master of Science in Food Science and would be proud to tell you that after graduation Cathy beat him out for a job they both pursued. After four years together and a proposal by mailing a ring cross-country, the two married and built a life in Maryland grounded in faith and family.
    Ford began his professional career with the National Canners Association, located in Washington, D.C. In 1979, he joined The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) where he was named President in 2005. He was passionate about the industry and his legacy of 34 years with TFI lives on through the Ford B. West Center for Responsible Agriculture, a training center in Owensboro, Kentucky named in recognition of his efforts with ResponsibleAg. In 2013, he was recognized by the Agricultural Retailers Association with the Jack Eberspacher Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2018 Ford was inducted into the Fertilizer Hall of Fame. Ford traveled the world with Cathy, but was happiest in his own yard tending to his garden, spending time by the pool with his children, and giving his four grandchildren endless rides on the gator. He was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Md. where he and Cathy facilitated Sunday School classes for over 30 years.
    He is survived by his wife, Cathy, who he married June 16, 1979 in New Providence, N.J, three children: Ashley Hurst (husband Brad) of Davidsonville, Md; Lindsey Lutz (husband Jason) of Stephens City, Va. and Lucas West (fiancĂ©e Kirsten Hartman) of Washington D.C.; four grandchildren: Ford and Brooke Hurst and Elyse and Owen Lutz; three sisters: Carolyn White (husband John) of Huntsville Al; Melva Benham of Clearwater Fl; Clarice West of Southern Pines N.C.; and one brother Rick West (wife Jan) of Heavener, Ok.
    A service celebrating his life will be held at a future date. The family wishes any memorial contributions to be made to The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins or Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Md. Online guestbook available at

Crofton High Starts Athletics

 The new Crofton High, which pulled students from South River and Arundel high schools, was ready to welcome its first class of ninth and 10th graders in August, but the pandemic has kept Anne Arundel County Public Schools students learning in a virtual setting since March.

Athletic teams are hitting the practice fields to get ready for upcoming seasons.

Elder Mary Meares Passes Away

     It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Elder Mary Meares (Davidsonville, Maryland), who passed away at the age of 97, on January 23, 2021. 

Visitation was held on Saturday, February 6th 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Evangel Cathedral (13901 Central Ave, Upper Marlboro, MD 20774). A funeral service was held on Saturday, February 6th 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location. A graveside service was held on Saturday, February 6th 2021 at 1:00 PM at the Lakemont Memorial Gardens (900 W Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD 21035).

Rt. 50 Closed Sunday Morning

 A tractor-trailer heading westbound on Route 50 near Patuxent River Road in Davidsonville caught fire and shut down lanes for over an hour on Sunday morning.The Anne Arundel County Fire Department received a call around 4:26 a.m. No injuries were reported but one person was evaluated on the scene.The fire was out at 5:57 a.m. and the fire department cleared the scene just after 6 a.m.

New Davidsonville Post Office Building

     Davidsonville’s new post office is scheduled to open in March in the Davidsonville Station mall at the corner of Central Avenue (#214) and Patuxent River Road. Necessary construction may be complete in time for a late February relocation.  The new post office will be bigger and better than its current building, with three times as many post office boxes available to rent in three different sizes. Most of the boxes will be renumbered, so if you get your mail in a post office box, be prepared to notify your correspondents of your new mailing address.

Barbara Roberts Passes Away

     Barbara Irene Roberts, 73, of Davidsonville, MD, died of Covid-19 related pneumonia Feb 5, 2021. 
    Born June 6, 1947 in Baltmore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Eino Fagerlund and the late Rakkel Hamalainen Fagerlund. Mrs. Roberts grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts. She graduated from the University of Maine in 1969. She taught elementary school in Millinocket, Maine, for one year, Montgomery County, MD for seven years and in Anne Arundel County at Davidsonville Elementary and Central Middle School. She retired from teaching in 2010. She enjoyed knitting, baking, baseball, spending time with her grandchildren and golden retrievers, and keeping up with her baseball family. She was a Bowie Baysox season ticket holder and enjoyed being a housing family for Baysox players and staff.
    She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Melvin Roberts, two children, daughter Allison Fix of Columbia, MD, son Andy Roberts and his spouse Lauren of Odenton, MD, three grandchildren: Colin, Emily, and David, and four siblings. Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the

Delores Reeves Passes Away

    Born February 13, 1930, to the late Ada Ruth and Orlando Miller. Beloved widow of Arthur R. Reeves, Jr.; mother of Ruth Reeves, Arthur R. Virginia Smith Passes Away

    Ginger passed away peacefully at her home in Davidsonville, MD on January 22, 2021.          Ginger was born on April 20, 1938 in Washington, DC and was immensely proud to be a third generation Washingtonian. She was a 1956 graduate of Anacostia High School in Washington, DC and enjoyed long lasting friendships with her Anacostia High School alum and her Broadview Baptist Church family. Ginger was an avid Scrabble enthusiast and she loved to go "2ABEACH".

    She was the beloved wife of the late Homer Wiley Smith, Jr.; mother of Deborah L. (Dave) Whitaker of White Plains, MD, Dale K. Smith of Annapolis, MD and Douglas W. (Sharon) Smith of Huntingtown, MD; sister of Shirley Milloy of Bethany Beach, DE; grandmother of Danny, Lauren, Jason, Dustin, April, Troy and Corey; great-grandmother of Nolan, Charlotte, Everly, Cash, Wiley, Liana and Colt, also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Bernie Avon Floyd Passes Away

    Bernie Avon Floyd "Avon", 82, a 45-year resident of Harwood, and previously from Louisville, KY, and Brownfield, Texas, passed away on January 29, 2021, in Davidsonville, MD.
    Avon was born on December 24, 1938, in Brownfield, TX, to the late Bern and Christine Floyd. He was a graduate of Texas Tech University and retired from the Dept. of Commerce Agriculture Census, livestock branch. He also served proudly in the US Army reserves. Avon was a West Texas Cowboy at heart and loved all things agricultural. Most of his early life was spent farming cotton and raising cattle and horses. In fact, his farming paid for his Texas Tech. education. After moving to Maryland he worked for the census bureau and managed livestock statistics with the agriculture census. During this time he continued to raise cattle and horses. He also enjoyed playing pool and poker.
    I n addition to his parents, Avon was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Norma Floyd. He is survived by his children, Diane Balsley (Manny ) of Harwood, MD, and Chris Floyd ( Heather Buhaj) of Churchton, MD, his siblings; John Floyd of Brownfield, TX, and Janna Griffin (Mike) of Chesapeake Beach, MD. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Paul Balsley, IV, Allison Balsley, CJ Floyd, and Madison Cornwell, and many nieces and nephews.
    Family and friends are invited to celebrate Avon's life on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at 10 am.
