Virginia Wathen Passes Away


    Virginia "Gini" Madeline Wathen (Slack) of Stevensville, MD, passed away suddenly Saturday, November 27, 2021. She was 79.
    She was born on September 7, 1942, in San Diego, CA, the daughter of the late LaRue Charles Slack and Evelyn Hamlin Slack. Gini grew up in a Marine Corps family living in many places around the country including IL, NC, VA, and the place she held close to her heart, Lanikai, HI. Gini graduated from Fairfax High School and attended James Madison University prior to moving to Georgetown and working on Capitol Hill. Her career as a real estate agent in Anne Arundel and Queen Anne's Counties fostered many new and lasting friendships with co-workers and clients. Having resided in Davidsonville, MD since 1977, she moved to Kent Island in 2000. Gini loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them; especially celebrating special moments and holidays together. She also enjoyed working in the yard, traveling, playing cards with her many friends on Kent Island, reading novels, doing crossword puzzles, and vacationing at the beach. Gini had an affection for all animals, in particular her pet Shih Tzus who went with her everywhere. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where she served on several committees.
    She was predeceased by her devoted husband of over 50 years, Henry "Bud" Wathen in 2015. She is survived by two children, Michael Wathen (Sandie) of Denver, CO and Amy Park (Scott) of Stevensville, MD; a sister Teresa Riggins (James); and four loving stepdaughters, Debbie Null (Eddie), Kathy Hill (Shephard), Lynn Hocketstaller (Walter), and Julie Kunzle (Chris). Her grandchildren, who brought her immense pride and joy, are Milly, Bryce, Grace, Alex, Jackson, Laura, Jamie, Eric, Kaitlin, and Priscilla. Her niece and nephew, Karen and Brian, were also a special part of her life.
    A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 2 p.m., at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, MD, where immediately following there will be a time of fellowship in Shand Hall. Interment will be privately held at Broad Creek Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the
