Bernie Avon Floyd Passes Away

    Bernie Avon Floyd "Avon", 82, a 45-year resident of Harwood, and previously from Louisville, KY, and Brownfield, Texas, passed away on January 29, 2021, in Davidsonville, MD.
    Avon was born on December 24, 1938, in Brownfield, TX, to the late Bern and Christine Floyd. He was a graduate of Texas Tech University and retired from the Dept. of Commerce Agriculture Census, livestock branch. He also served proudly in the US Army reserves. Avon was a West Texas Cowboy at heart and loved all things agricultural. Most of his early life was spent farming cotton and raising cattle and horses. In fact, his farming paid for his Texas Tech. education. After moving to Maryland he worked for the census bureau and managed livestock statistics with the agriculture census. During this time he continued to raise cattle and horses. He also enjoyed playing pool and poker.
    I n addition to his parents, Avon was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Norma Floyd. He is survived by his children, Diane Balsley (Manny ) of Harwood, MD, and Chris Floyd ( Heather Buhaj) of Churchton, MD, his siblings; John Floyd of Brownfield, TX, and Janna Griffin (Mike) of Chesapeake Beach, MD. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Paul Balsley, IV, Allison Balsley, CJ Floyd, and Madison Cornwell, and many nieces and nephews.
    Family and friends are invited to celebrate Avon's life on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at 10 am. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lothian, MD. The visitation and service will also be available on Zoom, please contact the family for the link.
