Free State Fly Fishers Meet Mar 6

    Guest speaker Michael Abramowitz will provide tips and methods to stay safe while fly fishing at the upcoming monthly meeting of Free State Fly Fishers.  Accidents happen and the best defenses are knowledge and preparation. Michael’s talk will cover the best methods to prevent the most common potential accidents that can occur on a fishing outing, whether at your local stream or a distant location. You will learn how to respond safely to incidents.

Spencer Is Player Of Week Again

The No. 1 Loyola Maryland Greyhounds received four Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse weekly honors while Lafayette grabbed one, as weekly awards were announced on Monday by the League office.

Loyola Maryland senior attackman Pat Spencer was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week.  Spencer had his third seven-point game in as many games this season in the 13-7 win over Rutgers, scoring a game-high five goals to go with two assists.  The senior earned a hat trick before the 3:30 had elapsed in the game after the Scarlet Knights took a 1-0 lead.    In the game, Spencer moved into a tie for 17th-place on the NCAA all-points list with 28.  

 Spencer, an eight-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, is now the most decorated offensive weekly honoree in Patriot League men’s lacrosse history.

Pat Spencer Gets Seven Points

     Pat Spencer posted a hat trick in the game's first three minutes, 26 seconds on Saturday, helping the No. 1-ranked Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team jump out to a 6-2 lead at No. 18 Rutgers University, and Jacob Stoverbackstopped the defense with 18 saves in a 13-7 non-conference victory at HighPoint.com Stadium.
     Spencer finished with five goals and two assists for his third seven-point outing in as many games this season.

Madison Carter Gets Six Goals


      Senior Madison Carter tied a career-high with six goals to lead the No. 10 Penn State women's lacrosse team to a 14-12 win at Cornell on Saturday.  The Nittany Lions tallied eight goals in the first half and six in the second to improve to 3-0 this season.
 
     Carter led the Nittany Lions with seven points, including her sixth six-goal performance of her career.  The senior now has 210 career points, moving into ninth all-time at PSU.

Free State Fly Fishers Meeting Mar. 2

    The Free State Fly Fishers are holding their next Fly tying session on March 2, 2019 from 10 am. to 12 noon at their clubhouse at 3789 Queen Anne Bridge Road, Davidsonville, MD. This is part of an ongoing fly tying education and fellowship initiative of the Free State Fly Fishers. These sessions are held on the first Saturday of the month from 10 am to 12 noon

Green Expo March 23

DACA’s annual tree giveaway at Davidsonville Elem. will be March 23 in conjunction with Green Expo.   The Scouts’ flag ceremony will be 11:00.  Pick up your free trees 11 to 1:00 and then go to Homestead  Gardens where the Green Expo will be open until 4:00 pm.  Boy Scout Troop 454, joined by the new Girl Scout Troop #2018, will perform the flag ceremony and will remain at the school to collect your tattered flags for respectful disposal

Mildred Crutchley Passes Away


    Mildred "Millie" Smith Moses Crutchley of Edgewater and Crownsville died on February 17, 2019 at the age of 99. Mrs. Crutchley was born on September 29, 1919 to the late Alonzo and Lillie Smith, of Crownsville.
    She was preceded in death by her husband Douglas N. Crutchley, her brother Irvin A. Smith, her son Keith Crutchley, and her daughter Janet Moses Lancaster Conrad Hughart.
    Mrs. Crutchley graduated from Annapolis High School with the class of 1937. She was a member of Davidsonville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Crutchley was employed by Sears & Roebuck as a teletype operator, when it was located on West Street as well as when it relocated to Parole Plaza. She was a life-long member of the Edgewater-Parole Homemakers Club, part of the University of Maryland Extension Service, serving in the capacity of President for three terms. Millie also was one of the first women contractors who designed and built her family home in Crownsville. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was also active in the Edgewater Senior Center, where she enjoyed working in ceramics, making many gifts for her family and friends. She also enjoyed dancing, sewing, gardening and bird watching.
    Mrs. Crutchley is survived by two daughters; Pamela Moses King of Athelstane, WI and Martha Crutchley Collinson of Edgewater, Maryland. She is also survived by two sons; Gary Dale Moses of Cloverdale, CA and Carl Brent Moses of Crownsville, Maryland along with eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two great great granddaughters and two great great grandsons.
    The family will receive friends at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, MD 21401 on Friday from 12 noon to 1 PM. A Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Friday at 1 pm. Interment in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

    On Thursday, February 14, 2019. The beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth Toffolo-Cresce; devoted father of Arthur V., Vincent and Nicole Cresce, and Elizabeth Montgomery; brother of Lawrence and Fred Cresce, also survived by 3 grandchildren. 
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, February 21 at 11AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD. Inurnment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation. Spencer Named To USILA Team

    Coming off his second-straight game with seven points, senior Pat Spencer (Davidsonville, Boys’ Latin) was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Team of the Week on Tuesday.
    Spencer scored three times and had four assists Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds defeated then-No. 15 Johns Hopkins University, 18-12.
    Through two games this year, Spencer has scored eight goals and assisted on six for 14 total points.

Winterson Griffith Passes Away


    Winterson French "Winnie" Griffith, 84, of Lothian passed away February 14, 2019 in Davidsonville. 
    He was born March 17, 1934 in Bristol to Harry and Lulu Elvira (Moreland) Griffith. Winnie was raised in Bristol and attended Southern High School. He married Sally Ann Nieman on February 27, 1954 and they lived and raised their family in Lothian. He was a lifelong farmer, and was also employed for over 30 years as an automotive parts manager with the Prince George's County Board of Education at the Brandywine garage. Winnie enjoyed hunting and baseball, country music, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Winnie is survived by his loving wife Sally Ann Griffith and children Heidi Mudd and husband Ray of Deale, Julia Harmel of Churchton, Polly Rogers and husband Bill of Reidsville, NC, Anthony Griffith and wife Janet of Alexandria, TN and Janice Stallings and husband Mark of Amory, MS. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, a brother Harry Lansdale Griffith and wife Pat of Germantown, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
    Family and friends will be received Tuesday, February 19 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at Rausch Funeral Home, P.A., Owings, MD where a funeral service and celebration of Winnie's life will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. James' Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Wesley Chapel U.M. Church or Deale V.F.D.

Carter Is Player Of Week


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Women's Lacrosse senior attacker Madison Carter was named the Brine/US Lacrosse Player of the Week by US Lacrosse Magazine on Monday.  It is Carter's first career National Player of the Week honor.
 
The senior led No. 12 Penn State to a 13-7 win over No. 11 Towson on Saturday in Holuba Hall.  The Nittany Lions scored 10 goals in the second half, including four goals by Carter.

Girl Scouts Camping At DFRC

Over the weekend, Troop 2018 — named to honor the year girls were allowed to enter Cub Scouts — ventured out on their first camping trip in the fields of the Davidsonville Recreation Center. Freezing temperatures make no difference for the group of 15 10 to 16-year-old girls.

Pat Spencer Is Player Of Week

* Spencer led #4 Loyola Maryland to the 17-9 win against #6 Virginia with five goals and two assists.
* Four of the five goals from the senior were unassisted, as he scored on five of his nine shots.
* Spencer assisted on sophomore attackmen’s Kevin Lindley’s goal to put Loyola in front 5-2 in the first quarter, before he added another assist on sophomore attackmen Aidan Olmstead’s goal in the third quarter.

Kathryn Allen Passes Away

    Kathryn Lorraine Allen, "Kitty" 99, a resident of Ginger Cove in Annapolis, passed away peacefully on February, 5, 2019 at her residence.
    Kitty was born on January 26, 1920 in Annapolis, MD to the late Clifford and Edythe Mae French. She retired from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. She was a longtime member of Davidsonville United Methodist Church and participated in the Daughters of the Nile, which is associated with the Shriners. Kitty enjoyed shopping, travelling and talking with people.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William T. Allen and her sisters; Jacqueline L. Laws and Mary Jeanne Ferguson. Kitty is survived by many close family members and friends.
    A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 11 am at the Davidsonville U.M. Church Cemetery, 819 Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kena Shriners, 9500 Technology Drive Manassas, VA. 20110.

Penn State Lacrosse On TV

The No. 12 Penn State Women's Lacrosse team, lead by Madison Carter of Davidsonville,  was selected for two broadcasts on ESPNU on the lacrosse schedule just released.  The Nittany Lions' home matchup against No. 2 Maryland at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 will kickoff ESPN's women's lacrosse coverage.  Penn State's contest at No. 23 Johns Hopkins will also be featured on ESPNU on Friday, April 19 at 5 p.m.

Joseph Cunnane IV Passes Away


    Joseph Francis Cunnane, IV passed away suddenly after a battle with addiction. 
    Joey is survived by his beloved Mother, Kathy Cunnane-Dodge; his devoted Fathers, Joseph Cunnane III and Kenneth Dodge; his loving sisters Courtney Melanson (husband Brent), Shannon McSkimming (husband Andrew), and Betsy Johnson (husband Alonzo). He is also survived by Stepmother, Mary Beth Cunnane and her children, Courtney, Emily, and Rebecca; nephews and niece, Chase, Grady, Maxwell, and Alana; and half siblings, Tim, Kim and Shawn. Joey is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and their families and friends. 
    Joey was born and raised in Crofton/Davidsonville, MD. He graduated from Arundel High School in 2007 and earned a B.A in Kinesiology from Arizona State University in 2012. He then went on to pursue a career in retail sales and personal training. As a child, Joey loved and played sports, primarily baseball and basketball. Baseball was his true love, having played on little league, county teams, and Arundel High School's 2006 state championship team. Joey was an avid Ravens, Orioles, Terps, and Sundevils fan. After a few years and many attempts at recovery, Joey relocated to Florida in constant pursuit of his ever elusive sobriety. He was an avid gym rat, always pushing and striving to remain physically fit and healthy. His family and friends would describe him as the guy who would do anything for anybody. He had a tender heart, an infectious laugh and smile, and larger than life personality. He always held his family and friends in the highest regard."Our hearts are saddened, but his spirit and cherished memories will live on. A beautiful soul is never forgotten."

Charles Dunlap Passes Away

Charles John Dunlap, 74, of Davidsonville, MD died Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at the Mandarin Chesapeake Hospice House, Harwood, MD.
 He was born February 16, 1944 in Washington DC, to the late John Henry Dunlap and Elsie Talso Dunlap. He is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Karen Slebodnik Dunlap, son, John Dunlap (Jenny) of San Diego, CA and three grandchildren, John Jr., Evelyn, and William. He is also survived by his brother, Steve Dunlap (Carol) of Port Republic, MD and many nieces and nephews.
Chuck graduated from Ukiah High School in Ukiah, CA in 1962 and entered the University of Virginia.  He interrupted his studies to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a corpsman. Upon completing his tour, he returned to the University of Virginia to finish his studies and graduate.  He also completed a Masters Degree at the University of Maryland.  He taught math in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties before serving as an administrator in several schools including Severna Park Middle School.
He was an avid sailor and a long-time member of the Annapolis Yacht Club.   
Travel was a favorite passion and he and his wife enjoyed touring the world and exploring new destinations and cultures. Chuck enjoyed reading, playing guitar, and spending time with family and friends.
The lives of those who knew and loved him will be forever changed with his passing and he will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be private.
