The 80th edition of
the men’s golf Army-Navy Star match got underway on Saturday with the first of
two days of action. Army West Point took a 2.5-1.5 lead over Navy after the
four-ball portion of the meet on a cool, sunny Saturday morning in Annapolis. The
Ryder Cup format has the two teams play four-ball matches on the first day and
seven singles matches on day two.
Junior Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville and
Spalding HS) and freshman Charlie Musto were three holes down early in their
match before rallying on the back nine to get back to all square. On 18, Musto
missed a 10-foot putt that would have secured the Navy point. The match was
halved with each team earning a half a point.
