Anne Arundel County is experiencing a rash of thefts from mail boxes, particularly in the rural areas.
While many of the thefts occur overnight when mail is left in the box, it also occurs quite often during the day just after the mail has been delivered.
Post Office officials advise not putting outgoing mail in your box until shortly before delivery and to retrieve your mail as soon as possible after delivery. Leaving either incoming or outgoing mail over night should be avoided. If going on vacation, have the post office hold your mail.
Not only are thieves cashing checks they steal, but they also use information in the mail for identity theft creating new accounts in your name.
