Sex Abuse Of Minor Charged Against Softball Coach In Anne Arundel County: Police

Sex abuse of a minor charges were pressed against a softball coach from Anne Arundel, police said. Officers think there may be more victims.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department said it arrested 47-year-old Donald Joseph Powell of Davidsonville last Friday and charged him with sex abuse of a minor, fourth-degree sex offense-position/person of authority and second-degree assault.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — A softball coach from Anne Arundel County was accused of trying to have inappropriate relationships with juvenile high school girls, police said Tuesday.

Officers identified the suspect as 47-year-old Donald Joseph Powell of Davidsonville.

Authorities said Powell, also known as DJ, was charged with:

  • Sex abuse of a minor
  • Fourth-degree sex offense-position/person of authority
  • Second-degree assault

Investigators think there could be more victims, and they urged anybody with information to come forward.

Police said they launched the investigation in December 2023.

Harold Burdette Passes Away

Harold E. Burdette Jr. (Davidsonville, Maryland),  passed away on April 27, 2024, at the age of 80.

Mail Theft

 A Capitol Heights man has admitted to stealing $250,000 worth of checks from mailboxes and depositing them in his own account.  Don't put mail out in your box overnight.  Davidsonville residents have suffered from mailbox theft over the years.

Madison Carter At Clemson U.


Former Penn State All-American Madison Carter, who led the Nittany Lions to two Final Fours as a player, became a member of the inaugural Clemson women’s lacrosse coaching staff in August of 2020.

Dorothy Davis Passes Away

Dorothy Carrie Davis, nee’ Custer, of Davidsonville, Maryland passed quietly after an extended illness on Friday, April 12, 2024. Dottie, as many knew her, was born on June 26, 1940 in Washington, D.C.

Dottie enjoyed a career in the NASA Radio and Television Division during the 1970’s attending many of the launches. In her role with NASA, she routinely greeted former and current astronauts at Cape Kennedy and at the headquarters in Washington, D.C. Dottie continued to follow NASA events and spend time with former colleagues into her retirement years.

An avid animal lover, Dottie cared for her rescue cats at home in Davidsonville and donated regularly to animal rescue and recovery nonprofits throughout the country. She also supported many causes related to American Indians.

Dottie was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, John Edgar Davis, and their son Jeffrey Allen Davis. She is survived by her son Kenneth William Davis; her daughter, Karen Lynn Edwards and her husband Jon Edwards; grandchildren Sarah Davis, Tyler Davis, Kipp Davis, Amy Edwards and Kimberly Edwards; sister Darlene Custer Carson; brother Michael Grimley; and other loving members of extended family and friends. Dottie made the world a better place with her subtle sense of humor and laughter, and her love for family, home and God’s creatures. Family and friends are invited to Dottie’s life celebration on Friday, April 19 from 6-7 pm, with a memorial service to begin at 7, at Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Evelyn Riddle Passes Away

Evelyn Riddle of Davidsonville, Maryland,  passed away on March 28, 2024, at the age of 101.

She was predeceased by : her parents, Minnie Alexander, and Walter Alexander, Sr.; her husband Don E. Riddle, Sr.; her son Don E. Riddle, Jr.; her siblings, Walter Alexander, Margaret Davis and Miriam Brauner; and her granddaughters, Cheryl and Emily Riddle.

She is survived by : her son Gerald L. Riddle, Sr. of White Post, VA; her grandchildren, Brian Riddle of Davidsonville, MD, Gerald L. Riddle, Jr. (Katherine) of Winchester, VA, Christopher Garner of Maryland, April Plaugher (Joe) of Strasburg, VA, Laura Phillips (Gary) of Maurertown, VA and Quinn Riddle of Denver, CO; and her daughter-in-law Laura Riddle. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held on Friday, April 5th 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory (2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD 21037). A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 6th 2024 at 9:30 AM at the same location.

Thomas Blohm Passes Away



Thomas William Blohm of Annapolis, Maryland went home to the Lord on Monday, April 8, 2024. Thomas "Tommy" was born in Alexandria, VA on March 8, 1939 to the late Thomas J. and Mildred Hale Blohm. He grew up in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland and graduated from Oxon Hill High School, where he excelled in many sports. He went on to play collegiate football and earned his degree from Shepherd College. Tommy then enjoyed a successful career in the insurance field, retiring from his own New York Life practice.

Tommy was a loving husband, father and friend. He was predeceased by his first wife of 41 years, Lahni (Nicholson) and their son, Douglas. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 25 years, Maria Anne (Regan-Zettler); his brother, Richard; his daughter, Tiffney Brockway (Tim); his step children, Patrick Zettler (Laura), Karen Arnold (Richard), Mary Quesnel (Michael), Michael Zettler (Laura), Andrew Zettler (Melissa) and Kathleen Fisher (John) and his eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Tommy made the world a brighter place. He was a man of strong faith and a parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church. Tommy always brought a smile to the faces of those around him. He loved to dance, play tennis and travel the world. He was a fierce friend, enjoying life-long friendships. Whether he was playing host to the ladies on their motorhome after a shopping excursion or cruising through the Chesapeake waterways on one of his boats, he knew how to bring friends together and create memories.

The family will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Tommy on April 16, 2024 at 11:00am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD

Gary Carrick Passes Away


Gary Lane Carrick, 73, a lifelong resident of Davidsonville, MD, passed away on April 2, 2024, after a long, valiantly fought battle with cancer. A veteran of the US Navy and a local business owner, Gary loved fishing in just about any body of water and, in his younger years, could frequently be found fishing with his boys. He was an avid bowler for many years and made lifelong friends during his days in the leagues. Gary enjoyed traveling and camping and spent a great deal of his retirement doing so with his wife, Regina, at his side.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Regina Doris Carrick nee Phipps; his sons, Allen (Tracy) Carrick of Shady Side, MD, and Greg (Pam) Carrick of Riva, MD; proud grandfather of Noah, Ashleigh, Veronica, Brandon, Kaitlin and Emily and the much-loved great grandfather of Josie. He is also survived by a sister, Kathy Lynch of Hampstead, MD, and a sister-in-law, Joan (Irving) Webb of Fort Myers, FL. He also leaves behind a community of friends and neighbors with whom he spent many happier days. Friends are invited to celebrate Gary’s life on Wednesday, April 10, from 6 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD, where his funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 am. Interment will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Davidsonville.

Spencer and Huskies Play April 6

The Connecticut Huskies (35-3) are the heavy favorites in the Final Four as they seek their second consecutive national championship. They have steamrolled everyone in their path in the NCAA Tournament, leading by at least 30 points in all four games.  They lead the nation in scoring margin, #3 in assists per game, #4 in shooting accuracy, #5 in rebound margin, #6 in scoring defense and #9 in blocked shots.

Deborah Tipton Passes Away


 

Deborah S. Tipton of Davidsonville, Maryland passed away on March 29, 2024, at the age of 72.  She peacefully passed away at home after a long battle with cancer. Deborah had a lifelong love for horses and was a barrel racer. She was also a dog groomer and breeder of Cocker Spaniels and Pomeranians. Deborah loved working in her yard and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by : her parents, Clifton R. Ward and Eleanor B. Farmer; and her brother Edward Ward of Edgewater, MD.. She is survived by : her husband William C. Tipton; her children, Shawn Tipton of Goldsboro, MD and Michelle Koester of Edgewater, MD; her sister Barbara Longo of Shady Side, MD; and her grandchildren, Hunter W. Koester, Austin W. Tipton and Samantha B. Tipton.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, April 3rd 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory (2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD 21037). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 4th 2024 at 10:00 AM at the same location.
