Pat Spencer Plays First NBA Game

DAVIDSONVILLE, MD - Davidsonville native Pat Spencer made his NBA debut this weekend with the Golden State Warriors.

Spencer attended high school at Boys' Latin in Baltimore. He was then a college lacrosse star for Loyola Maryland. He switched to basketball, however, after a decorated college lacrosse career.

“I’m fired up to be part of a great organization with great people,” 27-year-old Spencer wrote in a text to The Capital

Spencer won the Tewaaraton Award in 2019, honoring him as the nation's best college lacrosse player. He also set the NCAA Division I record for career assists with 231 and ranked No. 2 on the all-time points list with 380 by the time he finished lacrosse.

Spencer was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 Premier Lacrosse League Draft, but he never signed.

Spencer instead switched to college basketball, playing a single season for Northwestern in the 2019-20 campaign as a graduate student.

Melvin Harmel Sr. Passes Away

Melvin Joseph Harmel, Sr., 91, of Davidsonville, MD was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on February 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Melvin was born on July 1, 1932 in Mitchellville, MD, to the late William and Elizabeth Harmel. When he was four years old, the family moved to the family farm in Davidsonville where he would remain for his entire life. Growing up on the farm challenged him to learn many things. He became a skilled farmer and mechanic and was always willing to learn something new. These experiences led him to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a tobacco farmer which he did until his retirement.

Melvin enjoyed many things during his life. He especially enjoyed going to local tractor pulls and classic car events. He loved classic country music, often playing the guitar with his group of friends in his early years. Occasionally he would play a few tunes on his electric guitar for family. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with family and friends, especially Pitch. Time with family was special to Melvin.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Darla Harmel, his sons Melvin Harmel, Jr., Stephen “Steve” Harmel, Sr. (Barbara), stepson Brad Thumann (Angie); 6 grandchildren Joey Harmel, Laurie Ann Harmel-Schunder (John), Janet Harmel Bradley (Mark), Amy Harmel Pomeroy (Jess), Stephen Harmel, Jr. (Kristina), Garrett Harmel and 11 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Harmel, brother Gustave Harmel, grandson, Mark Harmel and stepson, Russell Thumann. A memorial visitation will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davidsonville, MD on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 beginning at 10:30am, mass to follow at 11:30am with burial to be at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. Maggie (Anderson) Bickhart Designing At Academy

Maggie (Anderson) Bickhart, daughter of Wesley and Kimberly Anderson of Davidsonville is a recent graduate of Liberty University and the following was published in the school newspaper

In the time since earning her degree in interior design and completing four years as a midfielder and defender for the Lady Flames Women’s Lacrosse team, Maggie (Anderson) Bickhart (’22) has been able to draw from both experiences at Liberty University to design a state-of-the-art lacrosse facility for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Only one month after getting hired at a commercial architectural firm, Bignell Watkins Hasser Architects, Bickhart was approached by one of the senior architects about helping with a pitch for a new lacrosse facility, knowing that her athletic experience would help inform what the space could include. The pitch was successful, and Bickhart has since made routine visits to the Naval Academy to speak with the athletic director and coaches to design the space that she described as having “everything any lacrosse player could ever dream of.”

For more info about Maggie, go to the Search space at the upper left of this screen and search for "Maggie."  There are numerous articles and photos  about Maggie and her lacrosse career at Liberty
