Mount Airy Center Questions

From the DACA Villager:

The Mount Airy Center, 869 Mount Airy Road, applied
to the County Office of Planning and Zoning for
certification for a designation as Institutional Use for
Religious Purposes. Residents of Mount Airy Road,
Meadowoods, and Royale Glen are concerned that
Institutional Use, as described in the application, may bring
unwanted change to their neighborhood. After a series of
public and private meetings in November, they requested a
discussion with representatives of the Mount Airy Center
to answer their questions.
On December 9, DACA members Brian Stanton,
Bridget and James Blake, and Malcolm Rice-Wolfe had a
cordial meeting at the Center with MAC representatives
Marty and Ann Sherman, George Madison, and Gerard
Helminiak, where they raised the following issues:
• Preserving Davidsonville’s rural and residential
character
• Noise and traffic
• Landscaping
• Safety
• Transparency
The key outstanding issue is how and when to
memorialize these issues so that they convey with the
property in perpetuity. We explained our desire to
ensure that future owners of 869 Mt. Airy Road don’t
take advantage of the new “institutional use” designation
to undermine this understanding. They said that they
were open to making these commitments part of the
deed and/or giving an easement to the immediate
neighbors, subject to consultation with their lawyer.
After the meeting, Mr. Sherman responded with the
following message on December 11:

Hi all,
I wanted to thank you for initiating the meeting on
Sunday. We want to be good neighbors who are hearing
your concerns about the use of the house. The following is
what I took away from the meeting:
Concern about the house/property becoming a 'megachurch'
- We have no plans to become a mega-church. Our
meetings have always been on a small scale; no more than
10-25 people at a time. If we have larger gatherings they
happen only a couple of times a year.
Concern about parking - There is no plan to expand
the parking.
Concern about adding to traffic - Our traffic won't
change from what it’s been for the last two to three years.
On a daily basis there are usually no more than 6-10 cars
coming and going.
Concern about intern vetting process - we are looking
into expanding our vetting process. We currently do require
them to fill out an application with references and they are
interviewed at least once if not more by two of our mentor
team. They are usually students who’ve been coming to the
National Student Leadership Forum over their college years
so they become quite well known to us.
Please let me know if there are other concerns or
questions that weren't addressed here. You are welcome to
contact either myself or my assistant, Elaine Mitchem
Warmly, Marty Sherman

Fire At Homestead Gardens

Anne Arundel County fire crews were called to Homestead Gardens’ wholesale center on Gov. Bridge Rd. in Davidsonville after a small fire broke out Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The fire was caused by an electrical issue inside a greenhouse, said Lt. Charles Fowler, a spokesperson for the county fire department. Firefighters responded at about 2:30 p.m. and were able to control, and extinguish, the flames.
The fire caused “moderate” damage to the exterior of a greenhouse, Charles said. No injuries were reported.

Lacrosse Hall Of Fame

From the Capital-Gazette:
Six of the greatest lacrosse figures in Anne Arundel County history were formally inducted into the Chesapeake Chapter of US Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Thursday night.
It was an emotional night filled with family, friends and fond memories. It was a wonderful affair that showed clearly why the Chesapeake Chapter is so vitally important.
This region has produced a remarkable number of outstanding lacrosse players and coaches. Those individuals whose accomplishments stick out deserve special recognition.
Certain players and coaches that achieved at a particularly high level warrant consideration for the National Hall of Fame administered by US Lacrosse. In order to be eligible for the national shrine, individuals must first be members of a regional hall of fame.
There is a good chance some of Thursday night’s honorees could wind up in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Josh Sims, who was always one of the best players on the field whether at Severn School, Princeton University or with the Baltimore Bayhawks, has impeccable credentials and should be a shoo-in.
Megan Riley Clark has an awfully darn impressive resume as well, having done the same things that have put other women’s players into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The former South River and James Madison star played on the United States Under-19 national team, was the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and a two-time, first team All-American.

Kate Graw Lamond, who played at Severn and  Dartmouth, also has an impressive history and should be under consideration.   You can read more about Kate at:

Looking Back At AA Kate Graw

From the Capital-Gazette:
Kate Graw of Davidsonville first picked up a lacrosse stick as an 8-year-old. It was 1986 and the Davidsonville Athletic Association started a girls’ lacrosse program so simplistic that practices were held in the front yard of coach Millie Nye. Graw and Amy Nye (South River, Brown University) would become standouts for strong Gators squads coached by Steve Barry.
Somewhere along the way Graw began playing summer lacrosse for the Quick Stix program led by Cathy Samaras and Sue Chittim, arriving at Severn School as an extremely skilled player.
Graw was a three-sport standout at Severn, also earning All-County honors in soccer and basketball en route to being named Capital Gazette Newspapers Female Athlete of the Year for 1995-96.
“Kate has always been very focused on whatever she did and she had three older brothers who taught her to be competitive,” Dr. Robert Graw said. “Kate really enjoyed the camaraderie of playing sports with her brothers and she never found any pursuit too challenging.”
Dr. Graw praised the “nurturing environment” his daughter found within the Davidsonville Athletic Association and at Severn School. He realized quickly that Kate had the drive, determination and desire to compete at the Division I level.
Graw was initially recruited to play basketball at Darmouth, but wound up pursuing lacrosse after taking a recruiting visit with Annapolis resident Jacque Weitzel (Garrison Forest), who would become one of her best friends. Those two were key members of Big Green teams that captured four consecutive Ivy League championships.
Graw proved so versatile she was named a second team All-American as a defender her sophomore season, repeated as a second team selection while playing midfield as a junior then earned first team laurels after being moved to attack as a senior.
“That shows Kate’s athletic ability and willingness to play wherever I needed her to help the team,” said Amy Patton, head coach at the Hanover, New Hampshire school from 1993 through 2016. “Kate was a prolific player for Dartmouth women's lacrosse – an exceptional athlete and student of the game.”

Kate Graw Lamond, along with Megan Riley Clark, Jack Schofield and Josh Sims will be in the USLacrosse  chapter's Class of 2019 at an enshrinement dinner on Thursday, January 24, at the Annapolis Elks Lodge #662.

Loyola and Pat Spencer Preseason Lacrosse Awards

Loyola was a unanimous choice to repeat as Patriot League champions, earning all 16 available first place votes. Voters are not allowed to rank their own schools so Loyola head coach Charley Toomey and sports information director Ryan Eigenbrode both awarded their first place selections to Lehigh  which finished in second place.
Navy came in third with 96 total points, seven better than fourth place Boston University.
Loyola attackman Patrick Spencer was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year which  was no surprise as he is the three-time reigning Offensive Player of the Year. The Davidsonville resident received the Jack Turnbull Award as the best attackman in Division I lacrosse last season.
