Pittman Fund Raiser
Hundreds of Democrats gathered Saturday in the "big barn" on Dodon Farm in Davidsonville as horse farmer and former community organizer Steuart Pittman announced his run for Anne Arundel County executive, hoping to unseat incumbent Republican Steve Schuh. "We're growing too fast," Pittman said in one of his key themes, but "we're not going to be anti-developer." "If we raise $1 million, we can beat Steve Schuh's $3 million easily," said Pittman, as he collected a $1,000 check from the county's firefighters union. Pittman introduced more than a dozen Democratic candidates running for county council and legislature. Len Lazarick, MarylandReporter.com

Connor Cox Sets School Records
Frostburg University football was very fortunate this year that a Division I transfer was available and just so happened to have a connection to the city in Allegany County. Connor Cox of Davidsonville had departed Dayton and was willing to consider Frostburg because that happens to be the hometown of his mother.
“Connor’s mom was born and raised in
Frostburg and he still has a ton of family here in town,” Frostburg head coach Fitzgerald said. “Tye
and I thought if we could just get Connor on campus we could convince him to
play here. Connor came for an official visit and we rolled out the red carpet.”
Cox has developed into the
difference-maker those two coaches were hoping he could be and has played an
integral role in turning around the Frostburg program. The South River High
graduate has thrown for 5,824 yards and 58 touchdowns while leading the Frostburg Bobcats to a 27-7 record during his
three seasons as the starter setting school season and career records
Cox was named Offensive Rookie of the Year
in the New Jersey Athletic Conference after throwing for 1,311 yards and 12
touchdowns. He also rushed for 537 yards and three scores.
It has
been a steady upward progression ever since with Cox passing for 1,864 yards
and 17 touchdowns in leading Frostburg to a 10-1 record that included a Regents
Cup victory over in-state rival Salisbury.
Cox took his game to
another level this season, establishing career highs in every category in
completing 185 of 310 passes (59.7) percent for career highs of 2,649 yards and
29 touchdowns. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound junior led the Bobcats to a 9-1 regular
season record and at-large berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs where they won their first two playoff games before losing to the eventual Div III champion.

Stroka Outstanding Young Scientist
From the Capital-Gazette by Jerri Anne Hopkins
Davidsonville
resident Dr. Kimberly Stroka, assistant professor in the
Fischell Department of Bioengineering at University of Maryland, recently
received a prestigious Outstanding Young Scientist Award.
Stroka, who directs
the Cell and Microenvironment Engineering Lab, was honored by the Maryland Academy
of Sciences and the Maryland Science Center. Each year, the groups select
winners of the Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) and Outstanding Young Engineer
(OYE) awards.
By combining
experimental techniques and theoretical modeling, Stroka discovered a new
fundamental mechanism for tumor cell migration. Through her work, aquaporins
(water channels that allow water flux across the cell membrane) could be
explored as possible drugable targets for tumor cell metastasis.
Basically, she has
been exploring how cancer cells travel through the body, whether through the
blood vessels or through organs and tissues, how they get past or through
healthy cells to reach new areas, and possible ways to prevent cancer cells
from moving through the body.
“My end goal is to understand why the process occurs, how it occurs, and figure
out ways to prevent it and stop it,” Stroka said.
Collectively,
her work has led to publication of 21 peer-reviewed journal articles, two
first-author book chapters, and 72 presentations at national and international
conferences and seminars.
Stroka lives in Davidsonville with her
husband and two children. She came to Maryland to be part of the relatively new
Bioengineering Department.
The OYS
and OYE awards recognize young Maryland residents who have distinguished
themselves with accomplishments in science and engineering. The nominations are
open to scientists and engineers 35 years old or younger working in academia
and 40 or younger working in other sectors. The OYS award was established in
1959 with the OYE award inaugurated in 1988.
Award
recipients are chosen by members of the Maryland Academy of Sciences’
Scientific Advisory Council.
