Elizabeth (Hodges) Spanagel Passes Away

Elizabeth "Betty" (Hodges)  Spanagel, 85, passed away peacefully at home  in Satellite Beach, Florida, on Saturday, April 19, 2014, surrounded by her family.

She was born April 14, 1929, in Annapolis MD, the youngest of the four children of the late C. Addison and Mary Eldridge Hodges. She was reared on a farm near Davidsonville, MD, and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1947. Betty was an employee of the Maryland State government for five years after her graduation. Betty took personal joy in her career as a house wife and nurturing mother while following her husband's career movements as a Naval officer. Besides the success of a 61 year marriage to Herman "Dutch" Spanagel, Betty considered her greatest joy and pride to be in their three daughters: Elizabeth Kent (Larry) Sparkman of Tallahassee, FL; Susan Parker (Eric) Hiller of Indian Harbour Beach, FL, and Ann Aline (Michael) Mudd of Dunkirk, MD. Besides her husband and children, she is survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One precious grandson, Benjamin, predeceased Betty in 1992.

Betty and Dutch have been communicants of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, Satellite Beach, since 1961.

A service will be held at that church at 11 o'clock on Friday, April 25, with a reception following in the church hall. It is requested only her remembrance be recalled in your prayers.
