For the past 38 years, the South County Pre-Kindergarten Co-op of Davidsonville has proven that learning through play fosters a love of education that benefits both parent and child. Its two teachers, Barbara Freeman and Ann Collins, hold more than 20 years of experience in the classroom.
They provide a rewarding and nurturing without smothering environment where children have room to express themselves and engage in imaginative play, completely unaware of how much learning they are absorbing. Being a child is not only encouraged but celebrated. There is no rush to grow up faster but to be present in the moment.
They play with homemade playdough, build castles with wooden blocks and paint with every color of the rainbow. No batteries, no computers, no fast forwarding — just being 3- and 4-year-olds, laughing all the while.
This year the nonprofit and the Maryland State Department of Education accredited school will be honoring its first Legacy Award recipient. This alumni-sponsored award recognizes an individual in our community for their outstanding commitment to the positive development of young children. All donations to this award directly benefit the Co-Op in honor of the award recipient.
The honoree will be chosen by the SCPC board of directors and announced at the Denim & Diamonds auction, dinner and dance on March 8. The event will be held at the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church from 7 to 11 p.m. Tax deductible donations are warmly accepted. Tickets are $40 each and still available. They can be ordered by emailingcoopauction2014@gmail.com.
