While Maryland is a heavily Democratic state, Anne Arundel County is able to elect Republicans to many offices, such as county executive. The present office holder is Republican Laura Neuman of Davidsonville who was appointed to fill the remainder of Leopold's term when he went to prison. She has announced that she will run again in the upcoming election.
Her major challenger is also a Republican. Delegate Steve Schuh is a political insider with many endorsements and a large campaign fund. The winner of the primary is expected to be the likely winner in the general election.
