Volunteer Opportunities

Stream Monitoring

Join us to learn about stream ecology and assist with our research, focused on three streams flowing through the Sanctuary. We’ll hike to the stream, sample for stream insects, then return to the Wetlands Center to sort and identify them by noon. Wear old shoes that tie tightly and clothes that can get wet and muddy. Bring a bag lunch, change of clothes, shoes and a towel. Survey will be rescheduled if it rains. For teens and adults.

Research: Stream Fish Survey

    Saturday, July 27; 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Using a seine net, we monitor the fish populations living in streams and wetlands. Volunteers willing to get wet are needed to help catch, identify and measure (and then release) fish. Wear old shoes that tie tightly and clothes that can get wet and muddy. Bring a bag lunch, change of clothes, shoes and a towel. Survey will be rescheduled if it rains. For teens and adults.

Education: Flying Wild Workshop

    Friday, Aug 9; 8:00 am - noon
Volunteer Naturalists, join our colleague Kerry Wixted, Wildlife and Heritage Service biologist, to learn how to teach bird-related activities. Flying Wild is a K-12 guide designed around birds. The guide contains a set of activities that are fun and engaging ways to teach about birds from migration races (complete with obstacles like buildings and outdoor cats) to bird beak buffets (exploring beak adaptations). In addition to activities, the guide focuses on how to hold Bird Festivals, and it includes great activities that can be set up at tables to teach people about birds at events (like International Migratory Bird Day).
To register, contact Kerry Wixted at kwixted@dnr.state.md.us or (410) 260-8566. Curriculum books must be purchased in advance. Visit www.flyingwild.org to learn more about this program and to purchase the book.

Stewardship Days

Saturday, Aug 24; 9:30 am – 12:30 pm (Invasive Stiltgrass Removal)
Help us prevent these non-native invasive plants from taking over our forests and fields. Wear thick work gloves if you have them. For adults and children at least 6 years old. Community service hours available.
