The Marlborough Hunt Races were run for 36 years on a spectacular course over the natural bowl and rolling meadows of historic Roedown Farm in Davidsonville, Maryland. The first races on this site in 1974 were the realization of the vision of a group of enthusiasts; including John Cory who rode family horses on the steeplechase circuit from North Carolina to Maryland, John and Jeanne Begg the owners of the farm in the 1970s and 31 founders who were primarily members of the Marlborough Hunt.
Over time the crowds swelled to more than 7,000 spectators enjoying the view from hilltop tailgating spots or a race sponsor’s Executive Tent. As many as 120 horses competed in eleven races. There was a great party atmosphere among families and friends feasting on a simple picnic or an elegant tailgate repast.
The tradition continued until 2010 when the late Jeanne Begg’s second husband, Hal Clagett, died at age 93. The farm was sold, and the Marlborough Hunt Races have been on hiatus while the organizing committee looks for a replacement venue. Racing fans, sponsors and local families look forward to the eventual revival of an Anne Arundel County favorite rite of spring — the Marlborough Hunt Races on the first Sunday in April.
