Melvin Shoemaker Passes Away


    Melvin "Sarge" R. Shoemaker, 77, a one and a half year resident of Connellsville, PA and previously of Davidsonville, MD, died on Friday, March 9, 2018, at Hillside Manor in Uniontown, PA. 
    Born July 26, 1940, in Connellsville, PA to the late Ray D. and Fern Klink Shoemaker, he retired from the United States Capitol Police. Melvin served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He loved to travel and was a longtime member of Chesapeake Christian Fellowship in Davidsonville, MD, the Association of Retired Police Officers, and the Vietnam Veterans of America. 
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith "Liz" Shoemaker; and a brother, Joshua C. Shoemaker. Melvin is survived by his daughter, Vanessa Shoemaker Parsons of Connellsville, PA; two grandchildren, Thomas J. and Samantha J. Parsons; four siblings, Gary R. and Edward R. Shoemaker, Alice Mae Nebraska, and Carol Ann Lambie; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. 
    Friends are invited to celebrate Melvin's Life on Friday, March 16 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 17 at 11 am. Interment Washington National Cemetery, Suitland, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hillside Manor, 177 Oliver Road, Uniontown, PA 15401.
