Carter Gets 4th Freshman Of Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women’s lacrosse freshman standout Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) was recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week for a fourth time on Tuesday afternoon.

Carter was a vital asset for Penn State this week in multiple areas in which the Nittany Lions went 1-1. Carter finished with five points on four goals and an assist, while pulling down nine draw controls, two ground balls and three caused turnovers.

In Wednesday's game vs. Cornell, Carter had an assist and a career-high seven draw controls along with a ground ball and two caused turnovers. In Sunday's win at Michigan, Carter had a game-high four goals, a ground ball, two draws and a forced turnover.

Carter has scored in 13 of 14 games this season and is second on the team with 34 goals, the most by a PSU freshman since 2012. Carter’s 41 draw controls are second best on the squad.

Carter garnered her fourth weekly rookie honor from the conference (Feb. 13, March 15, April 5). Carter is third on the team with 30 points on 27 goals and three assists, while ranking second on the team with 31 draw controls.

Carter’s 34 tallies are second on the squad, while her 2.43 goals per game rank in a sixth in the Big Ten and tops among all freshmen. Carter ranks as the fourth-highest scoring freshman in the country on a per-game basis.

Carter and the 14th-ranked Nittany Lions (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten) finish the regular season with a pair of home games against top 15 opponents beginning with Saturday’s contest against No. 12 Northwestern. That game will serve as Senior Day and Alumni Day with opening draw slated for Noon. Admission and parking are free

The regular-season will conclude on Thursday, April 28 at 7 p.m. against top-ranked and defending champion Maryland on Big Ten Network and BTN2Go.

A team captain in 2020, Carter ranks fifth all-time at Penn State with 197 goals and seventh with 218 career points. In 2019, Carter became the fifth Nittany Lion to reach 200 career points. She also has 334 career draw controls, 56 groundballs and 26 caused turnovers in 68 career starts. Carter scored 70 goals as a sophomore, a Penn State record, and 62 goals as a junior. She has 48 career multi-point games, including 20 games with five or more points. As a sophomore, Carter led the Big Ten and ranked 10th in the nation averaging 3.33 goals per game. The Maryland native helped Penn State to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two National Semifinals. Carter is a two-time IWLCA All-America second team selection, earning the honor in 2017 and 2018. She garnered two first-team IWLCA All-Region selections and one second-team IWLCA All-Region selection. Carter earned three All-Big Ten selections and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2016. Carter is a four-time member of the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and was selected Preseason All-America by Inside Lacrosse in 2019 and 2020. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Carter earned her bachelor's degree in Rehabilitation and Human Services in May 2019. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

Carter Gets Fifth Freshman Honor

Penn State women's lacrosse midfielder Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) was named the Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week, while Madison Carter(Davidsonville, Md.) was recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week for a fifth time on Tuesday afternoon.

Carter put together another outstanding performance by scoring four goals and collecting a career-high nine draw controls in PSU's 17-13 victory over No. 12 Northwestern. Carter scooped nine of the team's 20 draw controls as the Nittany Lions won the possession battle, 20-11. Carter scored two goals each in the first and second halves for the Nittany Lions. She is second on the team in goals (38) and draws (50).

Carter garnered her fifth weekly rookie honor from the conference (Feb. 13, March 15, April 5, April 19) and third in the month of April.

The 11th-ranked Nittany Lions (11-4, 3-1 Big Ten) will vie for the Big Ten regular-season championship when it welcomes top-ranked Maryland on Thursday night. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. with a live national audience watching on Big Ten Network. Admission and parking are free for all.

Madison Carter B10 Freshman Of Year

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Penn State women’s lacrosse attacker Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) was recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Monday afternoon by the conference coaches. Carter is the first Nittany Lion to earn a league freshman of the year honor.

Carter, who is having one of the best freshman seasons in school history, was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week a season-high five times. The rookie out of Maryland has 40 goals, which is eighth in the conference.

Carter’s 2.35 goals per game is fourth overall in the nation among rookies and first among all freshmen playing in the NCAA Tournament. Her 40 goals are second best on the team only behind Tewaaraton Award nominee Madison Cyr (48).

Carter’s outstanding season has seen her score in 16 of Penn State’s 17 games this season, registering at least three goals on seven occasions. Carter has scored four goals on four occasions and notched a career-high six goals at James Madison (March 9), which earned her national and Big Ten player and freshman of the week honors.

Carter has a total of 44 points this season and 55 draw controls, which is second best on the Nittany Lion squad. A career-high nine draw controls vs. Northwestern on April 23 helped lead the Nittany Lions to a crucial 17-13 victory. Carter averaged 3.29 draws per game, which ranked fifth overall in the Big Ten.

The 11th-ranked Nittany Lions (11-6) earned an at-large bid to their 22nd NCAA Tournament, which begins Friday. The unseeded Nittany Lions will face Winthrop at 4 p.m. in Gainesville, Florida with the winner moving on to the NCAA Second Round against host and No. 2 Florida on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.). 

Madison Carter Nabs More Honors

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women’s lacrosse freshman standout Madison Carter(Davidsonville, Md.) earned four weekly honors from national and conference entities on Tuesday.

Carter was named Inside Lacrosse’s StringKing National Player and Rookie of the Week. Additionally, Carter named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week for her terrific week in a pair of road wins over James Madison and Vanderbilt.

Carter bagged 10 goals in a productive week that included a six-goal game in an 18-17 overtime win at James Madison and a four-goal showing in a 15-11 victory at Vanderbilt. The six-goal showing was a career-best for Carter and is the most scored in a single game by a Big Ten player.

Using precise shooting, Carter connected on 83.3 percent of her attempts, scoring all 10 goals on only 12 shots. She picks up her second offensive player and freshman of the week honor.

Carter and the Nittany Lions now turn their attention to a crucial mid-week battle with fellow top 10 team, No. 7 Princeton, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. That game will be played at Penn State Lacrosse Field.

Seabrook Carter Passes Away

July 8,1987 - July 7, 2018 

    Seabrooke Sullivan Carter was born in Annapolis, Md. on his Mother's birthday. He was raised in Davidsonville, Md. and spent summers at the family home in Bay Ridge, Md. Seabrooke attended local public schools in Annapolis where he excelled at lacrosse. He graduated with a BA in English from Florida Southern College in Lakeland Florida where he also captained the lacrosse team and helped launch the school's fledgling lacrosse program. 
    After graduation he and a friend launched a creative writing website where he contributed many writings. He also coached the junior varsity lacrosse team at University of Tampa. Seabrooke was a wonderful and outgoing person who made many friends during his brief life. He was an avid boater and loved all water sports and his beloved Chesapeake Bay. He loved to travel and experience new places and people. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a loving, kind person who was always willing to try to help anyone who needed it. Though gone too soon he will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. 
    Seabrooke is survived by his mother Lezlie Carter, his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Louise Carter, his uncle Chris Carter and his wife Jody, his cousins Chance and Kyle Carter and their wives and children, his dear friend and mentor Adam Goodheart, his "sister" Sarah Castle and many other cousins, friends and family members. He will be buried in the Carter family plot in Shepherdstown, WV alongside his beloved grandfather, Mr. C. Berry Carter II, who passed away in 2009.

Madison Carter Honors

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week on Tuesday afternoon by the conference office. The awards are the first of Carter’s collegiate career.

Carter was Penn State's best all-around player in Saturday's 19-5 win over Duquesne. Carter scored a career-high four goals and dished an assist in the game. She connected on four of six shots, while collecting a team-high three ground balls and four draw controls. She was also one of three Lions to force two caused turnovers in the game.

Carter is the first Nittany Lion to nab a freshman of the week award and the first Penn State athlete to capture offensive player of the week honors this season. She is the second Lion to earn a weekly laurel, joining teammate Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.), who was named defensive player of the week on Feb. 16.

Currently, Carter leads the team in draw controls (7), ranks tied-second in goals (5) and caused turnovers (3) and third in points (6).

The No. 6 Nittany Lions return to action on Saturday for a road trip to No. 10 Virginia. Game time at Klockner Stadium is set for Noon. 

Joseph Carter Sentenced to 60 Yrs

ANNAPOLIS, MD. (WJZ) — A Davidsonville man will spend the maximum penalty of 60 years in prison for the sexual abuse of a minor and the second-degree rape of a three-year-old child.

Joseph Earl Carter, 33, was already registered as a lifetime sex offender from a previous sexual offense committed against another child.

“Mr. Carter violated the most innocent member of our community and received the sentence he deserved for his heinous crime,” said Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess.

Anne Arundel County Police were called to the Anne Arundel Medical Center for a report of child sexual abuse on August 16, 2018.

At the hospital, the three-year-old said that Carter had committed sexually abusive acts against her. The child also told a forensic interviewer at the Child Advocacy Center during a videotaped statement.

Police learned that Carter offered to watch the child while the caregiver was taking a nap. Carter said he was never alone with the child, which the caregiver at the time said was not true.

The victim, now four-years-old, took the witness stand during the trial to testify in court.

Under Maryland law, the child’s forensic interview was allowed to be substantive evidence at trial under the “Tender Years” statute.

The jury then saw the child’s videotaped recount of the abuse and then heard the testimony from the emergency room physician who treated the child, and the lead detective in the case.

Family members also described how the child changed behaviorally and emotionally after the sexual abuse.

Carter Gets 3rd Player Of Week

    Penn State Sophomore attack Madison Carter (South River-Davidsonville) was named the Big Ten women's lacrosse Co-Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon.

    Carter takes home her third Offensive Player of the Week honor this season and her second in as many weeks after a pair of impressive offensive outputs during victories over Drexel and Ohio State last week.
    The sophomore scored eight goals and added three assists for 11 total points while shooting at a .667 clip to secure her ninth and tenth games this season with at least three goals. Carter scored three times while adding a pair of assists for five points during a 15-6 victory over Drexel before scoring five goals with one assist in a 16-12 victory over Ohio State.
    Carter has scored at least two goals in every game this season and leads the Big Ten with 48 goals, which ranks third nationally. She currently has a 21-game goal streak and has registered at least two goals in 27 of her 34 games played only being held without a single goal once in her career. Her 56 points are also good for second in the conference only behind teammate Steph Lazo's 71 and rank ninth in the nation.
    Carter has also dominated on the draw this season ranking second in the Big Ten with 77 draw controls. She averages 5.92 draws per game, which ranks second in the conference and tenth in the nation.

Carter Is Player Of The Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the week as announced by the league office earlier Tuesday afternoon.

Carter earns her fourth Offensive Player of the Week honor after tying a career-high with six goals against No. 1 Maryland last Thursday evening. The sophomore currently leads the Big Ten with 58 goals to rank fourth in the nation just five behind current leader Michaela Michael of USC.

Carter also secured nine draw controls against the Terps, which was just one shy of her career-high. The sophomore currently has 95 draws on the season while averaging 5.94 per contest, both marks rank second in the Big Ten and tie for tenth in the nation.

The Davidsonville, Md. Native has now recorded three games this season with six goals and has double-digit goals in all but one contest on the year while riding a 24-game goal streak dating back to last season. Carter has only been held without a goal once in her 37 games played during her career.

Carter was also recognized as the Inside Lacrosse Alpha Lacrosse Player of the Week as she received 46 percent of an online fan vote to take home the weekly national honor.

The 14 goals scored by the Nittany Lions during the 16-14 setback to the top-ranked Terrapins were the most allowed by the nation’s 15th ranked defense who has only allowed an average of 9.00 goals per contest this season to lead the Big Ten.

Penn State returns to action on Sunday as they travel to Ann Arbor to battle the Michigan Wolverines at 11 a.m. to close out the regular season.

Carter Is Big 10 Player of Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) and senior Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) earn Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week accolades as announced by the league office  Tuesday afternoon, March 28.

Carter earns her second Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week accolade this season after receiving the same honor on February 21. This marks the fifth Offensive Player of the Week award so far this season for Penn State as senior Steph Lazo has earned this same distinction on a trio of occasions.

Carter paced the offense to a 2-0 week with eight goals and one assist for nine points. The sophomore scored a pair of goals while adding an assist during a 13-8 road victory against No. 5 Princeton before tying a career-high with six goals in a 16-10 win at Johns Hopkins on Saturday.

Carter’s 40 goals currently lead the entire Big Ten and tie for fifth in the nation while her 45 points are second in the Big Ten only behind Lazo’s 59 and rank tied for 12th in the nation. With 64 draw controls on the season, Carter also ties for the league lead and ranks fifth in the nation.

George Carter Passes Away

    George Wesley Carter, Jr., 87, a 46- year resident of Davidsonville and previously of Dundalk, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at Anne Arundel Medical Center surrounded by his family.
    George was born on March 15, 1932, to the late Ines and George Carter, Sr. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked as an illustrator supervisor with the Dept. of the Navy at the US Navy Yard. He was a 46-year member of Davidsonville United Methodist Church and his interests included playing the guitar and keyboard and power tools. George was also an avid traveler and enjoyed camping.
    In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sister, Ines. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sara Carter, one child, Georgia Carter and one brother, Fred Carter.
    Friends and family are invited to celebrate George's life on Friday, February 7 from 6 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037, where his funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 8 at 11 am. Carter On Tewaaraton Watch List

Penn State women's lacrosse senior attacker Madison Carter was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Thursday night.  Carter is one of 50 players on the watch list for the Tewaaraton, which recognizes the top women's lacrosse player in the nation.

Carter leads the Nittany Lions with 19 points this season, including 15 goals.  She already has three games this season with five or more points.  She was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week this past Tuesday.

Carter Gets All Big Ten Team Honor

    The 2016 All-Big Ten women's lacrosse team selections were announced on Wednesday morning. Penn State (11-4)  nabbd six spots to cap off another outstanding season. Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) and Abby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.) became two-time All-Big Ten honorees and were both unanimous selections.

      Cyr and Lazo were joined by Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.), Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.),Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) and Katie O’Donnell (West Chester, Pa.). Penn State and Maryland each has six players honored. The six all-conference honors match that of the 2003 team when Penn State had six All-ALC selections.

      Carter has been one of the top freshmen in the country by scoring 39 goals (2.44 gpg) and pulling down 54 draw controls. Both totals are second best on the team. Carter has also been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on five occasions. In Big Ten play, Carter has averaged three goals per game, which is tied for fourth in the league.

Carter Is Player Of Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Women's Lacrosse senior attacker Madison Carter was named the Brine/US Lacrosse Player of the Week by US Lacrosse Magazine on Monday.  It is Carter's first career National Player of the Week honor.
 
The senior led No. 12 Penn State to a 13-7 win over No. 11 Towson on Saturday in Holuba Hall.  The Nittany Lions scored 10 goals in the second half, including four goals by Carter.

Madison Carter All-Region Selection

The 2016 IWLCA All-Region selections were announced on Friday afternoon and Penn State earned five honorees. Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) and Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) earned first-team spots; Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.), Abby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.) and Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) landed on the second team in the West/Midwest region.

The Nittany Lions have at least five IWLCA All-Region honorees for a fifth time since the all-region teams began, which was in 2005

Carter, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is having one of the finest freshmen seasons in school history. Carter has scored 44 times and pulled down 59 draw controls, which rank second in both categories. Carter leads all freshmen in the NCAA Tournament in goals per game (2.44), boosted by her four-goal performance Thursday against. Winthrop.

The Nittany Lions (12-6) will look to reach their fourth NCAA Quarterfinals in the past five years when they take on second-seeded Florida in Gainesville on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live and free on Gator Vision.

Carter Gets Five Goals In Loss

The No. 8 Penn State women's lacrosse team fell 21-10 at No. 14 Princeton on Wednesday night at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.  The Nittany Lions scored seven goals in the second half, including five by senior Madison Carter.  Penn State dropped to 3-1 overall, while the Tigers improved to 2-1.

Carter led the Nittany Lions with six points, including five goals, with all coming in the second half.  She now has 216 career points, moving into a tie for seventh all-time at Penn State with Laurie Gray (1981-84).  On the day, Carter passed current volunteer coach Steph Lazo (211; 2014-17).  Carter now has 196 career goals.

Carter Is PSU Athlete Of Week

They play different sports, but both must weave through defenses and jack up shots from range. And each makes the net swish in near-quotidian fashion.

But the NBA's Curry just has hands in his face.

For Penn State's women’s lacrosse’s Madison Carter (#24 above), she has to avoid aluminum sticks.

Carter is the Daily Collegian’s Athlete of the Week after a 10-goal performance over spring break in which her Nittany Lions topped James Madison and Vanderbilt. Over seven games this season, the freshman has compiled 20 goals -- a fifth of the team total -- on a .789 shooting percentage.

Carter was also named Inside Lacrosse's StringKing National Player and Rookie of the Week. She also earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week honors on last week's performance.

Carter Is Big 10 Player Of Week

Penn State sophomore Madison Carter was named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, joining Maryland’s Megan Whittle for the weekly award.

Carter scored five goals and added one assist in the Nittany Lions’ 18-9 win over Lehigh on Saturday. This is Carter’s third career player of the week honor.
Madison is the daughter of Maureen and David Carter of Davidsonville.

Penn State next travels to Duquesne on 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Joseph Carter Convicted Of Child Abuse

DAVIDSONVILLE, MD — A 33-year-old Davidsonville man has been convicted by a jury of sexual abuse of a three-year-old child who is related by marriage. Five counts in total include second degree rape and lesser charges. Joseph Earl Carter will face a potential maximum penalty of 45 years and a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years due to his status as a repeat, violent offender for a previous child sexual assault conviction.

Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess spoke about the case after the conviction.

"It's truly unconscionable for any person to violate a child moreover for that person to be a family member the child trusted," Leitess said in a statement. "We will seek the maximum penalty for Mr. Carter's crimes in the hope that we can protect the community as a whole as well as the victim and her family. This case reminds us that as parents we can and should talk with our children from a very young age and reinforce their knowledge that no one is allowed to touch them and that they should come forward and tell a trusted adult if that happens."

Anne Arundel County police were alerted to an incident involving the three-year-old victim when she was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center Aug. 16, 2018, for a report of child sexual abuse. The three-year-old reported that her "Uncle Earl" had "committed sexually abusive acts against her. The child retold the incident to a specially trained forensic interviewer at the Child Advocacy Center during a videotaped statement.

According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, Carter volunteered to watch the little girl while his wife, the three-year-old's aunt, napped. Carter told police he was never alone with the child, but his wife told officers that he was alone with her while she slept. 

During the three-day trial, the victim, now four years old, took the witness stand and was qualified to testify in court. Under Maryland Law, the child's forensic interview could be introduced as substantive evidence at trial under the so-called "Tender Years" statute. The jury had the opportunity to see and hear the child recount to a specially trained social worker the details of her abuse. The jury also heard testimony from the emergency room physician who treated the child, the lead detective who investigated the case and family members who described the behavioral and emotional changes in the child after the sexual abuse.
