Edgar Hilley Passes Away


    Edgar C. Hilley, 91, also known as "Ed" or "Captain Ed", a 49-year resident of Edgewater and previously of Hyattsville, passed away at Anne Arundel Medical Center, on Thursday, September 22, 2016. 
    Ed was born on August 9, 1925, in Hyattsville, MD to the late Edgar and Thyrza Hilley. Ed served proudly as a pilot in the US Army Air Corp. from 1943 and then the reserves until 1961. He was a Second Lt. and flew the BT17, BT13 and AT6. Ed was a self employed realtor and opened E.C. Hilley and Co. in Hyattsville in 1952. In 1967 he was appointed Executive Vice President of the Maryland Association of Realtors where he retired after 26 years in 1993. Ed was a member of Riva Trace Baptist Church and a 52-year member of the West River Yacht Club, where he served twice as the Commodore. He was a member of the Kent Island Yacht Club, and a Flotilla Commander in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He also belonged to the American Legion in Edgewater. His interests included power boating with numerous trips to Florida, hunting, reading, and spending time with his family and many close friends. He loved animals especially his black lab mix, Buddy. 
    Ed is survived by his long time beloved partner, Elaine Baird; his wife, Winifred A. Hilley; his children, Leigh (Charlie) Burkhart of Titusville, FL and Joy (Larry) Leitch of Edgewater; his grandchildren, Lisa and Stacey Leitch, Dawn (Aaron) Jeffords, Jaime (Scott) Runnels; and his seven great-grandchildren. 
    Family and friends are invited to celebrate Ed's life on Friday from 2p.m. to 4p.m. and 6p.m. to 8p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 1,. 2016 at 10:30am at Riva Trace Baptist Church, 475 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD. Interment private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Riva Trace Baptist Church
